How to Save Money at Astoria Animal Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Bukhanova and staff were gentle and calm and able to do things to my cat Mooshmoosh that I never though she would tolerate! They dealt with an ear lasceration/painful infection and didn't bat an eye when Mooshmoosh shook blood all over them. They gave me plenty of time for answering questions and then the Dr. wanted to know all about the (cat's) diarrhea I'd mentioened to get to the bottom of it. They really care about animals there. Too bad they don't give vaccines, which means they can't be your only veterinarian.

I brought my kitten in for two visits last week and was highly impressed with the professionalism of this clinic- they take walk-one and are open 24/7. I was seen in a timely manner and the vet Dr. Bakhanova was very through in her exam and explanations, the staff was friendly and responsive. They were also very transparent about costs and will ask for your consent before performing tests/procedures. I highly recommend bringing your pet here if your usual clinic is closed and your pet is having an emergency!

I brought my 4.5 year old Ragdoll here when he had been vomiting for 2 days. They ran a blood panel and X-ray on my cat and found that he had acute kidney failure (he ate something he shouldn’t have). They kept my cat for a few days on IV and did an ultrasound and regular blood work. They also allowed visits with him, which was nice. I don’t feel price gouged by them (vets are expensive without pet insurance) and the price of their X-ray and ultrasound was a little cheaper than my regular vet. I appreciate the detailed explanation of the ultrasound results by Dr Serrano and the regular follow ups and detailed explanation on continuous care from Dr Kanwar. My Ragdoll is home and is doing well.

Dr B was really wonderful, informative, and patient when we brought in my grandmother’s cat for a medical emergency. Ultimately we had to put the cat down but she made sure we were sure in our decision and equipped with all the information needed to make such a call on such short notice. I cannot speak about her highly enough. Unfortunately, we felt the vet tech who manned the front of office was extremely cold and rude. The cat was dying in my arms and he took his time gathering the paperwork necessary to be seen by the vet and simply watched us struggle to transfer the cat from my arms to my grandmas to fill out the paperwork as she cannot see. He seemed annoyed when my grandmother pointed out her last name was misspelled on the cremation paperwork and did a few other things that overall made a very stressful and sad situation harder to deal with. I really did appreciate Dr B’s work so I am happy to give a positive review of this facility and return here if i should have an emergency with my own animal but I really hope they learn the importance of bedside manner.

They were AMAZING! I never write reviews but I will wherever I can about this place. I just got home from bringing in my cat who got her tail smooshed in the door. I am an anxious mess crying (with a mask on it’s even worse) and everyone there from Michele to another lovely girl to the vet Dr. Kanwar I felt so welcomed and nobody was judging. I have had really bad Experiences with vets before and have had a lot of trauma so to be treated so kindly and everyone be so sweet an patient made this terrible ordeal SO MUCH BETTER! Thank you to the staff! I would HIGHLY recommend them to ANYONE! ❤️
