How to Save Money at Salazar Road Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My black German Shepherd Deja came back limping after running thru the desert. I figured she had a cactus thorn in her foot. I called Salazar Vet clinic at 8am requesting a check up. They said if I can bring her now, Dr Albin could take a look. I did take her and Dr. Albin said it was just a cut and did not require any treatment. Drs. Albin and Sides are really working hard as they are short a vet now, but looking to hire. I was glad they were able to see Deja so quickly.

I have never felt so hated, as I did when leaving this clinic yesterday. I rushed my neighbor's infant, orphaned puppy to the clinic yesterday because she was very sick and dying. I was told upon dropping her off that she would be kept overnight. This was reiterated with my husband when Dr. Sides called and spoke with him regarding the puppy. She also told him that she had been trying to call me and that I wouldn't answer my phone (maybe try dialing the area code provided next time). When I called her to see what was going on, she told me that she was just finishing her paperwork and that she'd be ready to pick up in 15 minutes. I drove 45 minutes back to Taos and still had to wait approximately 30-45 minutes before the pup was brought out to me. The vet tech that brought her to me was extremely cold and hostile, her eyes filled with hate toward me. I assumed, since she was releasing her to me that she was going to be ok, since she was no longer interested in keeping her overnight. Upon returning home I mixed some milk replacer, that I purchased when picking the puppy up from the clinic, and got her out of the carrier to feed her, only to find that she was practically lifeless. She died 2 hours after getting her home. I honestly don't know how your clinic is still in business with the way you treat people. The ladies at the front desk were awesome. It's the vets and their techs that I have an issue with. I will be taking my 3 cats elsewhere from now on. Also the photo attached is of the rest of the orphan puppies that I was accused of not properly feeding and carrying for. Really??? Judge a person based on the fact that ONE out of nine orphan puppies got sick..... Just an update for the morons at this vet clinic, the other 8 puppies are alive, happy and healthy. I ended up keeping 2 of them.

Called before they were open to let them know I was bringing in a cat attacked by a bobcat. Took care of the paperwork immediately and left Oscar to their great care. Doctor called and gave update. Picked him up at the end of the day. Staff was excellent and friendly. Doctor was kind and caring.

My family and I have used Salazar Vet for over 25+ Years . Salazar veterinarians go above and beyond. We recently had to put 2 dogs down due to cancer in less than a year, the whole staff was so caring and kind and made a tough situation that much easier. I wouldn’t trust my pets with anyone else in town.

We are visiting for just 2 months and SO lucky to find this veterinary practice for one of our little Italian Greyhounds who is having issues with her back legs. Dr Trish is redoing cold laser therapy on Aly and is making headway.
