How to Save Money at Edinburg Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Hats off to everyone! Dr. Robbins and Jess were both awesome. As a new dog owner, they took the time to answer all my questions and provide great advice. I must also give a shout out to Eden, Jenna and Jules. Prior to Archie's visit I had some questions and concerns about Archie. When I called they understood where I was coming from and answered my questions always saying don't hesitate to call us back. Everyone there has a true love for pets, have smiles on their faces and are awesome to talk with. Thanks for making Archie 's (and dad's) first visit a welcoming and happy experience. See you all in 2 weeks (if I don't call you all with questions first!

Do not attempt to make an appointment for a sick animal. They made it clear to me via text they book weeks out and are not in the business of seeing sick pets. They make you put down a deposit just for your animal to receive an appointment and then keep the deposit if you need to cancel, EVEN if you’re cancelling days prior to the appointment. Twin Rivers Animal hospital took my puppy in immediately and the nurse even pulled some strings to ensure my dog was comfortable during her visit. This is clearly a business focused on making money not treating animals.

from all things exotic care for my bunny, to new puppy shots and his neuter, to an eye surgery on my cat and I have nothing but great things to say about Edinburg Animal Hospital. Lovely staff and doctors who are beyond caring, always patient and understanding. Thanks so much for all you do and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with the care of all my boys!

Great vets and awesome staff. Thank you for caring for all our pets. The rats love you. Doggy appreciate the compliments. The cat gives you the middle claw, because he's an unappreciative cat.

My bunnies have been patients of Dr. Fanders here for about 2 years now. Rabbits require exotic vets who have tons of experience as they're different from dogs and cats. I was actually recommended to this place by a friend in the NJ Bunny Parent Group on Facebook. I had been going to Red Bank (a great place too), but the care was getting too expensive. So I am very grateful that Madison and Louis are able to be patients here. It's a small business with a small staff, but you and your pet will get the attention you deserve. Just be patient, call ahead, be nice, and you'll be fine. They're now allowing one masked guest to go inside during your appointment. It was nice to see the inside! They even have a separate waiting area for exotics. The vet is located in an older building with a quiet, woodsy, homey feel to it. There is ample parking and you just call before heading inside. The staff is kind and helpful. My girl bunny has been getting her teeth trims here for about two years by Dr. Fanders. Dr. Fanders was able to discover the teeth issues Madison was having and sent over some photos. Poor Madison had a lesion on her tongue from pointy molars/teeth. Dr. Fanders was thorough in her explantations of everything going on so I could understand how to take care of her moving forward. Two years later, Madison is doing much better, even after her most recent visit this past Monday. She hurt her front paw and needed some medicine and rest. She also received a good combing by Dr. Fanders (bonus) and is feeling so much better. For that visit, I believe that it cost $130 including her medication. Not the cheapest, but exotic vets can cost more. They accept Care Credit if you need to stretch out the payments over 6 months which is great too. On another visit last year, I had to bring in Sir Louis as he had chewed parts of my rubber slippers. Dr. Danielson had to see him as Dr. Fanders wasn't available. Luckily he was totally fine and I learned not to leave my slippers laying around. I don't believe that they're accepting new patients at this time, but that could change in the future. Anyway, this is my experience and Madison & I (not sure about Louis) are very happy with them.
