How to Save Money at Princeton Vets: Animal Hospital at Kingston & Blawenburg

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The Animal Hospital and its staff have set the GOLD STANDARD for care of our animals. I've been beyond thrilled with all of our experiences here over the last seven years that we've been clients. We've been bringing all six of our animals (three dogs, three cats) here, and Dr Tokiwa (Dr T!) and his staff have always taken the time and care to thoroughly understand our animals and their needs. They have not stopped at their first diagnosis, but have gone on to make sure that they were able to recommend the very best treatment possible. Dr. T saved the life of my favorite girl-dog with a very tricky surgery. He has been compassionate when we decided, for behavioral reasons, that our three-year-old stray needed to be euthanized (such a painful decision that it changed the course of my life), and all the staff have taken the time to make my big 86lb goofy dog feel comfortable about getting a needle stuck into him (he howls like a teenager). Our cats have had their own set of unusual diagnoses, and never once did I feel the need to second-guess the advice that I was getting from them. Oh, and last but by no means least, the vet techs have been awesome in the quality of care and questioning that they give. Guys, keep on doing what you're doing because it's awesome! You're worth every penny. I'm only sorry that we're moving house to Connecticut next week and I'm going to lose you all.

This business lacks the professionalism and expertise that you should expect from a veterinary practice. When our dog was sick, they left her inside of a cage for over 10 hours because their office couldn't appropriately schedule the visiting specialist, and they couldn't effectively communicate with families about expectations. In addition, they've tried to bill me twice for unnecessary services because they lack the coordination and organization to appropriately manage their facility. Lastly, it took them over 10 business days to communicate vital test results for our dog, and they only reluctantly (when we decided to leave the practice) decided to recommend that we visit a specialist, although this is what was warranted since the tests were completed. I would recommend that you NOT use this practice - your dog or cat will thank you for it!

We've been taking our cats to the Animal Hospital at Kingston for several years, and we've always been impressed by the quality and consistency of care they've received. Recently, when one of our cats got sick, Dr. Schwartz went above and beyond in treating him, and then made sure to check in with us on multiple occasions to make sure his condition was continuing to improve. Suffice it to say we won't be taking our cats anywhere else for their medical care -- the treatment they receive here is superb.

All the staff here are fantastic! We've been coming in for about 10 years with four cats and a dog and all have had amazing treatment. Dr. T and the whole team has helped our cats: first with brain cancer, the second with an intestinal blockage and hyperthyroidism, third's weightloss, and fourth's hysteria/aggression at every office visit. They've been there every step through our dog's health problems despite his fear of strangers (at first we brought him in with a muzzle, but it's the only place now where he is never aggressive towards strangers), including two CCL tears and corrective surgeries, as well as a tumor resection with a very long healing process. There are no words to describe how grateful I am for the care they've provided over the years. I passionately recommend to everyone I know that they come to these offices.

They are nice and caring but their prices are ridiculous. There are plenty of good vets that won't rip you a new a hole every time you bring your pet in.
