How to Save Money at Feline Health Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have mostly good things to say except one thing that was a true deal breaker! The vet is very helpful and exceptionally knowledgeable and the admin staff is also great, proactive, and efficient. However, our problem was that the handling techniques are aggressive and a bit outdated (like using scruffing as the go-to restraint tactic), and the tech was unwilling to adjust them to more modern fear-free techniques when I asked, and instead told us to just use even more sedation for visits. I have a very friendly cat who usually is calm at the vet, and unfortunately this is the only vets office I have ever seen her growl and yowl at. It is a great office otherwise, but I just couldn't watch my cat go through a literal wrestling match just to have her blood drawn one more time. It was consistently upsetting for both of us. We've since moved to an office that uses different techniques and she now takes needles with no complaints again while distracted by treats and only mild body pressure restraint that was tailored to her preferences (while still keeping the tech's safety in mind of course). In sum, decide what's best for you and your cat and if they're fine here that's great, but if not please consider that it might be because of the overly aggressive, "one approach fits all" method of handling here, and that vet med has come a long way and an angry/scared cat is not the norm or your only option anymore. Like I said, it's otherwise a great place and I was really disappointed that it didn't work out for us, but you know your cat best and are their only advocate, and that comes first.

Our cat suffered from allergies since we had adopted her in 2020. We had taken her to numerous vets prior to the feline health center who treated her itching and wounds but not her allergies at the root. Once we took our cat to feline health center they were a knowledgeable, helpful, and had connections to a pharmacy that compounds medications (since our cat really wouldn’t take pills) and we finally have found a medication that is in a treat form that is helping our cats’ allergies. They worked with us to find a solution which no other vets had tried before.

The staff and Dr's here are so amazing and helpful.. they are extremely thorough with examinations and yet still super gentle and loving while handling the cats.

I have been a long time customer of Dr. Ratti and her team and always felt like I was a valued client until today. My kittens needed to be medicated twice today prior to my appointment which was a five hour commitment. It took me over 45 minutes to catch both of them in their carriers when I arrived 15 minutes late for my appointment was told they couldn’t take me. You really have got to be kidding me! This was a total waste of my day and my kittens were unnecessarily medicated and stressed out for a 40 minute car ride. Very unprofessional and extremely disappointing.

We have gone to Feline Health Center for years and with different cats. Dr Ratti and the staff are the most pleasant people to work with in the care of all our cats.We have always felt they were in the best care no matter what the reason we were there. Whether it was a routine checkup or a more serious matter they always took the time to make sure we understood everything we needed to know in order to make the best decision for our cats well being. We just had the difficult decision to put our precious Sheeba to rest and would not want anyone else to attend to that but them. They allowed us as much time as we needed to say our goodbye. Dr Ratti, Denise and Patti even took the time to send a hand written card offering their condolences. We can't thank them enough!
