How to Save Money at Madison Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff here are professional, so caring, and patient. The doctor has spent over thirty minutes on the phone with me in the last 24 hours as my dog needed emergency surgery. They really love and care for their own and made space for her even with their packed schedule. All 3 times I've called in the last 3 weeks they have been able to see her in less than two hours. We are so appreciative and thankful to have such wonderful animal care near our home. Note: there is a handicap accessible entrance on Main Street. You will need to press the bell to gain entrance.

My family were Madison Animal Hospital customers for 40 years. One of my current dogs, Clover, went there for 9 years until I took her in two years ago due to my mother's Alzheimer's. This weekend, we were in the Catskills before coming back to Madison for a visit and Clover developed bloat, almost dying and needing emergency surgery. When we got back to Madison, I called them to schedule getting her stitches and staples removed and they told me she couldn't come in because they weren't accepting "new clients" (though as previously mentioned, we were absolutely not "new"). They showed no empathy for her condition or care for her at all. An extremely disappointing conversation with the people we trusted to care for our dogs for decades. Edited to add: While the hospital replied here with the same public copy/paste reply they use for every complaint, they have not reached out privately -- in spite of the fact that they have our contact information, given the fact that we were clients for 40 years. This is obviously an attempt to smooth things over publicly without actually addressing their behavior, and I won't be sending an email to an inbox that will likely remain unanswered. My dog will be getting the care she needs from Livingston Animal Hospital, who were incredibly helpful as soon as I called.

It’s taking me since 2019 to write my experience with Dr. Stark. I brought in my 16 yr old, indoor cat to get fluids to help him with constipation. This is something we had to do every couple of months. At that time, Dr. Stark told us he was due for a rabies vaccine. I explained he was an indoor only cat, but she began to use scary tactics to scare us into vaccinating him. I reluctantly agreed. When we arrived home 15 minutes later, he was having seizures in his carrier, we rushed back to their office but he died in my arms. No vet should ever ever scared a client into vaccinating their pets. Especially a pet that was coming in because he was not well. Dr. Erdman was there when we arrived and he said it wasn’t the vaccine. Shame on him for not reporting it as a vaccine reaction. Be your pets’ advocate, do not let anyone scare you into doing anything that doesn’t feel right to you.

It is quite disappointing this time has come but of course all good things come to an end. Today, I spoke to an incredibly rude receptionist (named Carlos) and boy - they really just allow anyone to speak to you in a disrespectful manner. I have been coming to MAH for years and never had an issue - they were kind enough to send me reminders when it was time for my dog to get his vaccines + yearly cleaning. Every vet I have encountered in that location has always been super kind and warm to my boy. Over the last 2 years, my preferred vets have left the facility (not sure why!) and this was my first time someone in the location was outright rude to me. I think the CareClub is a great offering but the rising cost for lack of service just doesn't justify it anymore. Sad to see this go but truly do your research, if staff are leaving very consistently - maybe its not the best place you want to bring your pet.
