How to Save Money at NorthStar VETS

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had an Incredible experience at this hospital. They are VERY fairly priced. All three of our dogs got the same sickness, however, NorthStar only saw our oldest guy (9/18). We ended up bringing our other two, on a different day (9/20), to another vet because NorthStar was at capacity for the night due to so many serious emergencies. The other vet, Priority Vet, charged us more than DOUBLE for the same treatment that NorthStar provided our old guy. In addition to their great prices, the staff here are compassionate, gentle, and truly care for the patients NOT about nickel and dime-ing desperate dog parents. This will be the only animal hospital we go to from now on. Thank you, NorthStar!

Our sweet dog had an emergency situation while in Tom’s River visiting my brother. Recommended by one of his neighbors, we brought her to North Star Vets in Brick on a Saturday evening. We had the most wonderful vet, Dr. J Lloyd who explained everything and took our love for Punkin into consideration. Punkin spent an overnight with wonderful people like Tony and Destiny that cared for her lovingly and we got to take Punkin home the next day. We were treated with love and kindness from our phone call until departure. I truly appreciate North Star Vets!

The staff and dr. Nathalie are truly exceptional. I’m not one to leave reviews however after yesterday it is beyond necessary. I had a very sick feral cat that I was taking care of and Priority Vet told me they couldn’t see her because she was feral - NorthStar welcomed us with open arms (thank you Cathleen at the front desk) and they all were so beyond compassionate and caring. She was in very bad shape and our doctor and the techs were so honest, kind and made this whole devastating experience so much better. I truly hope you know that kindness goes a long way - although we couldn’t save my babygirl we gave her peace and comfort while she crossed the rainbow bridge. I am forever grateful for every single person that was there yesterday and I cannot thank you all enough for being so diligent, compassionate, honest, professional and just angels. It is so obvious they care so much about the animals that come in here and what’s best for them. Forever grateful for you all thank you ♥️

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Our 6 month old puppy was having an allergic reaction. This was the only emergency vet open on the area. Despite a previous bad experience with another family pet at this location, we decided to bring him in anyway because it was the only place open. They gave him a Benadryl injection and told us we needed to wait for him to be evaluated by a doctor and we were NOT allowed to leave. We found out there were other people who had been waiting 4 to 5 HOURS by the time we had gotten there, and were still waiting when we left. The woman with the brown hair at the front desk decided to give me an attitude, telling me “well that’s how emergency rooms work” and was arguing with me about our decision to leave. They ended up charging us $257 and our puppy wasn’t even seen by a vet. It felt that they cared more about money than treating the pets. I do not understand how this place is allowed to be considered an emergency vet hospital. We will NEVER return and I will tell EVERYONE I know that they should never take their pets here. DO NOT BRING YOUR ANIMALS HERE EVER!!! TAKE THE HOUR DRIVE AND FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL ACTUALLY TREAT YOUR BELOVED PET!!

We called Northstar early Friday am because our dog Willie was clearly in pain& our veterinarian’s office was not yet open. The receptionist was very nice & said we could come right in. Everyone at the office, the people at the desk, the nurses& Dr.Paiva , were kind, caring knowledgeable and helpful. We could tell they care about the animals they see. Willie looked better even before he left the office& is on the mend. Thank you again for your care & concern.
