How to Save Money at Cheshire Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We lost 2 dogs in one week. Cheshire Animal was so sympathetic and professional. They guided us on the steps we needed to take during this heartbreaking time. Over the 3 years of being patients, they have given us excellent service. I highly recommend this Animal Hospital. Hopefully, in the future, we can return with another dog.

Brought our girl in to Cheshire animal Hospital on Friday and again today . Daphne had such wonderful care. Dr. Gross was so great with our girl. I know they did everything they could for her today. We have her back home tonight and we are waiting for a biopsy to come back tomorrow. Whatever the results We will know that she was with very caring people and she has had the best care. Thank you all so very much, John and Diana Wichland

I am very pleased with how the vets showed real compassion towards one of my dogs that can be very difficult to take care of. I feel that compassion is not just a word to gain business here but something that is actually shared.

***UPDATE March 27, 2023*** Sandy in office refused me service today when I arrived to pick up heartguard and flea/tick medication today because Barb (Barbara) put a note in my file that I had written a negative review at my last annual exam and to refuse me service until such time that I had "discussed with them". I did explain at length that Devon was terrible at my last three appointments, over last 2+ years. In other words, change my review or no service. Though the response from the owner indicates Barb reached out to me, no she did not. I thought Barb was the nice one, guess not. At least I didn't have an emergency! This is highly unethical and unprofessional. Original Review January 2023: Devon is a nightmare and truly does not care about more than your money. At my dog's annual exam, she came into exam room when vet had taken my dog into another room for shots and blood work, Devon stormed into the room I was in and snapped the amount I owed. Completely taken off guard I asked where my dog was and why wasn't I able to pay at the front counter at the end of my appointment like every other annual exam. She gave no answer simply repeated the amount I owed. No receipt, no asking if I needed flea/tick, etc. I thought something happened to my dog she was so cold and terrible. Barb is nice and Dr Pearson is great, but Devon and the few other rude people drown out the good. Not worth it especially with Dr P retiring near future. No Dr P is hardly ever there.

As a former Vet tech, I was very impressed with their services, but there have been some changes and it seems you have to advocate what is best for your pet over the simplest things and even then its gonna take a few phone calls. Declined to give my cat a feline leukoma vaccine because he didnt have the snap test done there, it was done at another clinic, so they wanted another $50 for a test that had already been done, and if I didn't do it, they refused to give my cat his vaccine. Although they had given him his vaccine with the same information the year prior. Also prepaid $300 to get my dog allergy medicine, called a month afterward to see if they had received it yet, nope, it was "lost in shipment" 3 weeks previously and no one checked on my $300 medicine, I was not given a tracking number I was relying on them to do some sort of follow up to ensure the time sensitive medication got to me. I have since found another clinic to take my animals to.
