How to Save Money at Small Animal Emergency Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Let me start off by saying that as far as the well-being of my dog, I cannot speak to yet since I literally just left a few hours ago, but I am in high hopes he will be fine. The picture below was taken before the surgery. Now the staff was very friendly and compassionate. Dr. Turner was knowledgeable and thorough in her explanations. I want to give a big shout out to Ryan who handled my dog mostly and he was very nice and super friendly . He treated my dog like it was his own .The waiting time is like any ER not favorable but that’s just the nature of it I suppose.

Really wonderful caring vet. I brought my Kira, a little yorkie there and she was really bad off, I thought she was going to die. They immediately took her from me and told me to go home get some rest and come back in the morning. When I returned my dog was like a brand new dog. She was playing and happy. The only reason I give them a 4 and not a 5, is the bill was 1100. But it was soooo worth it to have my Kira 100% cured.

Our dog had been in a gruesome dog fight. He was in very bad shape. The vet tech was quick to take him right back. We decided to speak to the vet prior to treatment and issue a DNR because of the condition. The vet did an examination of him without meds or x-rays (per our request) We had to say good-bye to our sweet Bubba. I would highly recommend this place. The level of care and compassion is beyond what I expected. Cheaper than the ER vets in Greensboro and a lot more friendly and compassionate. They wrapped our sweet Bubba in a really nice Bag so we could take him home to bury him. Our hearts are so broken and this place really was there for us. We drove from Asheboro area

I NEVER write reviews but this place deserves another bad review. Bringing my dog here was a complete waste of time. We ended up leaving after finding out my dog hasn't even been looked at after being there for almost 3 hours. I asked for an update but all I got was "I don't know, we are very busy". Everyone else who asked for an update got the same response. She actually seemed annoyed that people wanted an update on their sick pets. I understand other pets might be a higher priority, but 2.5 hours with no update is unacceptable. Comminucation goes a long way in situations like this. We had no idea what was wrong with our elderly old dog and were very worried. The fact that he wasn't even looked at and was just sitting there in the back by himself makes my blood boil. The woman at the front desk seemed more concerned about her Grub Hub delivery more than anything. No compassion at all from her. They are clearly understaffed and unconcerned. Just reading the responses from the "owner" on other bad reviews confirms this place is very unprofessional. I've never seen an owner respond to a bad review with an attitude. It's amazing this place is still in business. Do yourself a favor and take your pet literally anywhere else.

My poor baby was hit by a car. I rushed him over here to the small animal emergency clinic. The vet was nice enough but I feel like they basically stole $1,000 from me. That's how much it was for x-rays and overnight care. My poor baby died in the middle of the night. I think he had a broken pelvis and they should have told me that the best option would be to put him down, not take $1,000 from me and then still need an extra $89 for his cremation. I would be wary of this place. I will never take another dog there ever again.
