How to Save Money at Veterinary Hospital at the Lake

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give 0 stars I would. My dog has seizures and twice they have failed to call in his medicine in at my request due to them “being busy”. We have taken both our dogs there for the last 8 years and word for word she said “this is above my pay grade” when asking to look into changing medicine due to my dog continuously having seizures. She can’t keep an employee there for longer than a few months. Every person acts like they are too busy to help when we have spent tens of thousands of dollars at her vet. Do not take your animals here, they cannot even keep up with their current clients. Absolutely the worst experience every time.

Dr. Jane Barber and her team should not even be allowed near your fur baby’s. This office puts money over the care of your animals. Dr. Barber will assume the absolute worst and use worst case scenario in order to scare you to attend unnecessary appointments so she can fill her pockets. We have been going to Dr. Barber since April 2021 for our husky which is pregnant with two pups. Every interaction with Dr. Barber has made my Wife and I more and more worry about the health of our beautiful husky and her pups. Come to find out from a real vet that specializes in reproduction, our husky and her pups are healthy and happier than ever! Our most recent visit with Dr. Barber has put an awful taste in our mouths. We were told that our husky’s due date was on June 26th. On the 26th she was not going into labor, so we made an appointment to come in on the 27th to have a cesarean preformed. Halfway through the appointment on the 27th and after running unnecessary tests and ultrasounds Dr. Barber decides to tell us that she messed up the due date. The actual due date was 28th. Dr. Barber stated at the appointment that she found out about the mess up on the 25th! Then why didn’t she call us and tell us over the phone? It’s because we didn’t pay and sign up for her “on call service” as she stated in the appointment. We would’ve not set up the appointment and wasted money on unnecessary tests if we knew the correct due date! She then proceeded to charge us for her mess up and attempts to get us to put a non-refundable $500 deposit on a cesarean that our dog did not need! After talking to her personally about the situation, our concerns with her as a vet and demanding a refund for her mess up. She states the appointment was medically necessary in order to maintain the health of our husky and that she would not give a refund for her mistake. We are not and never will take any of our precious animals to Dr. Barber ever again. I suggest you do the same!

Awful management, unprofessional staff and Drs. that does not put the pet or client first. Drs use worse case scenario scare tactics to deepen their pockets. Unless it’s a surgery, they do not give estimates, so the average person walks out of the exam rooms and are completely shocked when told the invoice amount. Mainly this place would be your “one and done” visit unless you like to keep returning and handing over your hard earned money! There are many options for Veterinary Services in this area. Stop and think before you go there, so many clients being taken advantage of.
