How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I feel they treated my babies like they were their own. From the time I got there, and they did the exam and procedures I felt cared for. My beautiful Yorkies were attacked by two other large dogs. In the care of Vetco, my babies are getting back to tiptop health!

Bennett is a service dog who specializes in assisting with PTSD. I am a disabled veteran. I believe that companies owe every consumer respect. I am tired of the demands placed on us as consumers while companies do whatever they want. I’m glad that other pet owners had a great experience at this location, but unfortunately, I cannot share in that sentiment. My experience was quite different. I went online to schedule an appointment for my service dog, Bennett, because we couldn't see his regular vet, and his vaccinations were nearing their expiration. Since I needed to board him for an upcoming surgery, it was important to get his shots updated for his safety. In the notes attached to the appointment, I asked about getting his ears cleaned and advice on shedding—he’s a lab, so he sheds a lot. I made it clear that Bennett didn’t need a check-up and wasn’t sick; I just wanted his vaccinations updated. I received a call from the location where someone told me they needed to reschedule the appointment because my questions about ear cleaning and shedding would require a wellness visit. I explained that I wasn’t looking for medical advice and that my priority was getting his vaccinations done. They put me on hold, then came back and confirmed the appointment for 3 PM. However, shortly afterward, I received a voicemail informing me that they wouldn’t be able to see Bennett due to the questions I had asked, as they considered those to be medical inquiries. I’ve asked similar questions to other veterinarians in the past without any issues or the need to schedule a separate consultation. When I called back to express my frustration, the representative became snappy and irritated. She told me that she had explained everything and abruptly hung up on me. This was a terrible example of customer service and an unacceptable response to a customer's frustration, especially since the mistakes were on VETCO's part. I will never bring Bennett to this location or use this company’s services. What happened to just caring about a dogs wellbeing.

A special, special thank you to Kristi, Dr. Doyle and their team at the Vetco Pleasant Valley location in Raleigh, NC!! I am so blessed and thankful to be able to work with these kind hearted people! We found out that Forest has a tooth rooted abscess and let’s just say, before our appointment Mama was losing her mind! Forest has been with me through transitioning into adulthood and every single up and down life has thrown at us for the last 10 years. Though it’s hard for me to admit, my baby is getting older and when I noticed the abscess of course the worst case scenario overwhelmed my mind. After our appointment with Kristi and Dr. Doyle I was able to put my mind at ease. They worked with me with my financial position to get Forest an exam and the medication he needs and helped me create a plan of action for his treatment and recovery. I truly felt Forest was in the best hands and that they truly cared about my baby’s wellbeing. I am so grateful to have met and worked with them and I am so excited for Forest’s next steps for treatment so we can enjoy the rest of the time we have together. I thought my time with Forest was cut short, now we have hope and are determined to fight! Thank you guys so much for providing such good care and filling me and Forest up with faith and hope! I am so blessed and grateful for Kristi, Dr. Doyle and their team!

We had a follow up appointment today and it was an awesome experience from check in to check out! Zachary was the first smiling face I saw. He was so kind (and also funny!) Our tech Zaniyah is always sweet and so very patient with my dood that has separation anxiety. And Dr. Alcorn is so down to earth. I can actually talk and not just be spoken to about my pet and her needs. Thanks guys for taking such great care of us :)

We absolutely love Dr Alcorn. Our experience with her has been nothing less than praiseworthy. Unfortunately, we have not had the opportunity to see her as our vet the last 2 of the 4 years our dog has been a patient at Vetco. As a whole, this company is not designed to support your educated pet healthcare. Over the last two years, we’ve felt as though we’ve had to actively fight for the vet to provide basic and informed treatment of our dog. I do not believe you are saving money going to this vet; I know you will not be saving time going to this vet. I wish I could express the amount of frustration (and sadness) towards the utter lack of uncoordinated care from a practice we once loved. *Update: Vetco never responded to the email requested in their reply to this review. Vetco Hospital Manager, Nicole, also chose not to answer a follow up phone call.
