How to Save Money at TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Davidson

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The people there were very nice and they did a fine job, but they were very expensive, tried to order things my dog didn't need, and have the feeling of a profit-first medical center. I would recommend looking into other places first. Update: after 4 visits to this clinic my sense of a profit-first vet remains the same. Every time I've taken my dogs in, they call back saying my dogs need test XYZ which will cost an additional $300. We ordered it and, surprise surprise, it came back negative.

Darla and I had a great experience at Total Bond. Darla is almost six months old and paraded right in, prancing right up to the staff for pats and rubs. Dr. Hay did the same and took the time to answer my questions and offer professional guidance. Darla sat in between his legs and was comfortable with him the the whole time we were there. I was so amazed by her ease, I took a photo of Dr. Hay with her.

Super nice vet techs. Sheba loved them right away. They were very patient and thorough and covered everything with me before we did anything with my baby. She warmed up to the doctor right away and he went to one knee, she put her paws up on him and gave him kisses. Great bedside manner. She is a bit of a drama queen especially when having blood drawn but I was comfortable and confident with the services of the vet techs there. When she was returned to me in the exam room, she was still totally in love with those girls. They treated her right. I have used two other Total Bond locations previously with another rescue, and with totally satisfied with the services I received there. I gave four stars only because I felt that some of the services are a little pricey. I believe I could get a heartworm antigen for less than half what they charged me. I was happy to have a free first exam so that helped offset some of that cost. They did also mention I could have the option of having the prescriptions she needs written for me and I can go have them filled anywhere I want. Overall completely satisfied with the staff and their treatment of my baby. They do have my complete trust.

My dog Axel was 11 months. He started throwing up and vomiting Wednesday night 6/7. It didn't stop so I took him in for an appointment Saturday 6/10. He was given a shot and prescribed proviable-Forte and scheduled a follow up monday 6/12. He passed away Sunday 6/11. Don't choose a vet that not 24hrs or doesn't supply an emergency number to one of their doctors. It's not a good feeling not being able to contact anyone or being redirected Carolina Veterinarian specialist. They had care of of both my pups since 8 weeks. Just sad.

Our experience at Total Bond was incredible. Everyone was so kind and helpful. We rescued a puppy from the animal shelter and had some concerns. They were able to see him that day and confirm that he was a healthy pup. They were very thorough, caring, and professional. It was by far one of our best experiences at a veterinarian’s office. We were so pleased that we will be switching all of our pets to them immediately.
