How to Save Money at Sycamore Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been going here since it opened. Highly recommend! Staff is so friendly. They truly care about your pets. Dr. Sokoloff is the absolute best. My cat loves her and hey if a cat likes someone that is amazing.

They were very thorough & comforting to Emma on her exam. They also took the time to explain things to me. Emma had a great 1st visit.

They are amazing. This is our third dog at this clinic. Nothing negative to say. Great care of other dogs. From puppy to adult they have taken care of our dogs. Did an exceptional job taking care of our sick dog. Dr. Angela was helpful and understanding with our sick lab. She was there to ease both dogs peacefully from our care. That’s why we are back again with our new Labrador puppy Mickey. He’s under their care as we start the new puppy vaccinations and we will be with through his long pampered life.

While Dr. Sokoloff was out on medical leave I took my sheltie in for a check on her anal glands. (Let me start by saying how much I liked her care and hoped this would be THE vet for us.) They took her back to a different room and were expressed. Two weeks later she had a pungent odor in that area. Took her in and Dr. Warren expressed them again, said that she had difficulty expressing them. Charged me for the visit as well as the antibiotics to treat an infection $$$. In nine years she had never had any infection in that area and no tech or other vet had said they had any difficulty performing this task. A day later I noticed she had passed some blood from her rectum. I called Christy and said I needed her seen that day if possible and at least for Dr. Sokoloff to contact me to explain what happened. Christy was apathetic, saw no issue with the bleeding and said she would pass on the message and if I wanted an appointment I could see Dr. Sokoloff three days later! I then took her to a different vet who allowed me to see her express them and said that they had become infected and needed to be flushed. $$$ Coincidence that prior difficulty turns into an infection? Possibly due to over manipulation of the ducts causing bleeding? As noted in another post Christy needs to take a class in phone etiquette and triage! I finally talked with Dr. Sokoloff after her return and explained how I felt that the coincidence of her other vet having difficulty, then an infection and bleeding afterward and being charged again for an issue I felt they had created was wrong, not to mention the cost of having to get another vet (who saw the significance of the bleeding and saw her that day) treat and cure the issue. Dr. Sokoloff was sorry of course, but there was no offer of any compensation for the cost of treatment for either vet or time. Not being accountable for a mistake then charging the customer for it is not how you keep customers!

Best place for my pets. This place have been the go to for 3 of my pets and I love it. I love the convenience and the quick response when my pet has an emergency.
