How to Save Money at Carolina Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My pup got admitted here straight from Happy Tails. After years of my pup having problems and vets telling me it was all minor (Happy Tails was also great— I’m not talking about them), this vet clinic was the only one to truly look into what was going on with him. It was unfortunately cancer and at this point it was too late— he was already bleeding internally and there was nothing they could do. I wish I had gone to this clinic first before Downtown Greensboro Animal Hospital. I truly believe he would still be alive. Their euthanasia room was honestly perfect. It doesn’t feel like you’re at the vet. They gave us as much time as we needed with him and they were so, so sweet. Both Dr. Olsen’s (there are two and they’re married which is cute), were thorough, compassionate and kind. I’ve genuinely never had a stranger be this sweet to me during such a hard time in my life. I’ll tell you— it is definitely pricey. But they are worth every penny because they WILL find out what’s wrong with your dog. Without them, we would’ve never known what happened to our Ollie. Although we didn’t have a happy ending, I couldn’t be happier with the care we received.

So, 4 weeks ago... I had an emergency with our beagle dog. She was attacked by a new GSD we had taken in and was trying to re-home her. Long-story short... My husband called our vet, they were closed and gave Carolina's of Emergency services, he then called them, they stated to come on in they could see her. We walked in the door me carrying her blood all over me, head to toe... her in shock. The first thing the front desk girl said was it's going to be at least $1000. Idgas... fix my dog is what I was thinking. I said fine. I don't care. But she said we need a per Auth. For funds before we can take her back.... I obliged, a technician came to get my beagle, and I continued filling out paperwork for the next 30 minutes.. I waited 5 hours... Not once did anyone check in with me. Let me know how things were going, etc. The doctor called my husband after me stating on the paperwork to call me... that she was out of surgery and was looking around, but they would keep her for the remainder of the night, and we could pick her up in the morning. My husband said we'll we are still here in your lobby. The girls at the front desk never said for us to leave, never checked in on us or let us know how she was doing.. the only thing they were concerned about was talking about the people coming in and out of the front door, like we couldn't hear them talking about their own customers. This place makes me sick. I will never take another member of my family there. Ever! And yes, we took our baby home that night she was given 4 meds, an antibiotic, and 3 pain meds.... she only got the chance to take 2 pills, and she passed away.. $1200+ later, and she lived 7 hours after surgery... The form I had to sign stated it could cost up to $1200 or more... I knew it would be this way.. no Emergency Vet is for the pets anymore. All the good guys are gone from this world... These places just make me 😠 😡

They took great care of my Lemmy! I would do anything for this dog, and I was so stressed out. I did whatever was recommended and he’s back home and as happy as can be. Thank you to everyone, y’all are the best!

Sad story. We called this vet after our dog was attacked by another dog in our yard. We were told in the phone that if our dog was actively bleeding they would take him. Upon arrival we were Rudely turned away. We were forced to drive even farther to be seen by another facility. Unfortunately we had to put him down due to injuries. Unfortunately a sad situation all around. I’m very disappointed that a pet care facility would turn us away after saying they would see us. I am also disappointed in the lack of compassion for our dog coming from a vet hospital.

My dog had been sick for months. We went through a lot but we’re finally able to take her to CVS for an ultrasound. They figured out the problem but she passed away the next day. The staff was wonderful and my experience was really good. I am grateful for the radiologist and her amazing attitude. I honestly think she helped me mentally grasp that this was not good. She was compassionate and empathetic. She even called when she found out my dog had passed and offered her sympathy. I mean in the situation that I was in at the time, they were very respectful and supportive. I thank them for that.
