How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I visited here at 8:30am on a Wednesday morning to drop off my five-year-old golden retriever, Jasper, for his comprehensive exam appointment. Banfield is inside of Petsmart. Petsmart opened later than my appointment. There is a button on the building to the right, that I had to press so that it rang a bell inside. Then, a staff member opened the door. Once I got to the check-in counter, I noticed that it was a little bit busy. There were a couple other people present with their furry friends. One of the staff ladies was on the phone with a customer while the other two customers ahead of me were speaking with staff. The wait was not very long. I would say that I was inside about 10 minutes. Checking went by very smoothly and I was so that they would call me once Jasper was ready. Unfortunately, I got a phone call stating that there was some debris in Jaspers ear and that they wanted to do an ear swap with costed around between $25-40. I don’t remember exactly. Of course, I consented to the procedure. Honestly, I wasn’t even surprised. Most of the time there’s something going on with his ears. A little bit later she called me back to let me know that Jasper had some type of infection and gave me the options for treatment. One option was where they could treat him there with a medication that would last 30 days so that I wouldn’t have to administer medicine at home on basis. Obviously, I chose that option. However, they also said that Jasper has some inflammation in his ears and they want him to take a steroid to help So, that was another medication that had to pay for… My final costs was $227 even. Needless to say, dogs are like children and can be expensive. On the bright side, the rest of his examination was great. I do have him on a wellness plan so that I get flea and tick prevention, heartworm prevention, 2 comprehensive exams a year, free office vet visits, and a dental cleaning for about $65 a month. I arrived back 4:45pm for pick up. I’ve paid for the services perform and the medication. The staff member went over the medication and the procedure that they did with Jasper. It didn’t take very long and the staff lady who assisted me was very friendly.

First time here. Great service. Never met the vet but can't really complain overall it was a great first experience. They agreed to see our cat who has a repeat UTI on the weekend when our vet was closed. Well definitely consider switching when we start to travel and use their membership program.

Great customer service at the front desk, nurse & Dr, got in same day appointment for my fur baby after expressing her condition shows they truly care for your pet, once I got there they treated her exceptionally 💖 I’ve visited other vets where they don’t treat my pet with the same care! Definitely would recommend coming here! Her DR was Dr.Julian

I can't say enough about the expression of kindness and professionalism I received from Dr Haver, Tori, and Faith. They supported me while I had to make a difficult decision about my pet.

Again, I’m disappointed at this location. First, the front desk receptionists are always passive aggressive, especially Ciara. They purport to be nice by smiling, but when they are speaking to you they have the most condescending tone. I waited to post this review until after the third interaction because I prefer to give people grace than to assume that their current mood is their actual personality. But, this has been my impression every single interaction with her and another receptionist (Melanie, perhaps). At any rate, I’m a concerned pet mom and I will ask all the questions I need to ask in order to feel informed about whatever procedure I send my son there for. I will be canceling my pup’s wellness plan and changing vets. I don’t expect perfection, but I do expect basic human decency. Update: I followed up with Banfield via email as mentioned in Banfield’s response, and they never responded via email or phone. It’s clear that they don’t care at all. Also, they increased the OWP plan amount by $144, but offer no additional benefits. Nor did they notify customers. 0/10 I would never recommend.
