How to Save Money at Campbell Suzanne DVM

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Since moving to North Carolina, we have had the good fortune of working with the staff of Cleveland School Animal Hospital. We recently had to say goodbye to a beloved Shitzhu (Tinsel). Dr. Basden, Mellissa and all of her staff were very considerate, helpful and compassionate in this very difficult time for us. We are grateful for their work and highly recommend them to anyone. Over the years they have been great with all of our dogs and I give them credit for giving us many more years of quality life with our pets.

Always a great experience. Our dog had such a good time with being petted and treats while getting blood taken that he didn't want to leave! And most important, their diagnosis have been right the first time, every time. The costs are reasonable.

I felt the need to share my morning with friends that have pets. I would be terrified to hear that someone I know has taken their fur babies to this place!!! Cleveland School Animal Hospital Poor Service - DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR PET! Con-Artists! I carried my two cats to Cleveland School Animal Hospital on Oxholm Circle (40/42 ~ behind SECU) for surgery this morning. I had the paperwork faxed to me in order to complete it in advance so not to be there a long time as I was going into work late - was told I would only wait 15 to 20 minutes. 35 minutes AFTER getting there and listening to the staff talk about their mornings and the weekend and everything under the sun, I am finally called back to the exam room. I told the tech one of my cats got three to four laps of water before I could stop him almost two hours prior to my coming in. The tech then checked with the veterinarian and she said the veterinarian said unfortunately she could not do the surgery today because of that. I’d already told the folks working in front about the water, they said the vet would more than likely just do his surgery after my other cat’s surgery to give him a little more time and it would be fine… but I was not offered this convenience once I got in the exam room. Since I had to take one cat back home before getting to work, I decided to just take them both back and reschedule the whole thing. When I called later today (same day) to reschedule I was told the surgery would now be $146.00 more than I was originally quoted. When I asked why, they said the girl was new that told me $350. NOT ONLY THAT, NOW I would ALSO have to schedule a pre-op appointment at a cost of $27.50 for each cat…and it HAD to be a SEPARATE visit from the surgical visit. When I asked why… again, they said the girl that scheduled this was new and forgot to tell me that when I called the first time - BUT they did not mention any of this when I arrived at the original appointment this morning!!! This was first mentioned ONLY when I called to reschedule. SO, this means bringing them back TWO more times when the vet office is about an hour from where I work. So let’s re-cap, with the 27.50 extra for the pre-op visit, and the “misquote” of $146.00 difference in the total for just ONE surgery is now $525.00... a far cry from what I was told in the beginning which was $350.00!! When I asked her to explain the cost line by line she was choked up and could not deliver. She just said, “ma’am, that’s just what I was told… I’m sorry.” I can't help but think I am being taken for a ride. Am I wrong or would you trust these folks with your pet after this??? Not me! I feel like since I left with both cats this morning, they jacked the prices up on me when I called back to reschedule. I don't trust them with my babies. I am glad I found this out first before letting them put their hands on my cats. I felt like I could not trust them after this morning’s inconvenience and this afternoon’s price hike and I was so glad I took BOTH my pets back home this morning! After getting to work and telling what had happened to a coworker, she said she’d also had a very unpleasant experience with this vet office and would never carry her pet back there again. Please think twice before bringing your pet to this office!
