How to Save Money at Dogwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog trouble had a very bad experience at another vet before. And they where awesome with him. Best service I could of ever asked for! They made him feel as comfortable as possible! If I wasn't moving I would always coming here!

Firstly, the women at the front desk were very kind and patient, so great from the jump! Secondly, the tech that helped us with everything was patient and understanding as well. We came in with three med/large sized dogs, and two of them aren’t fond of other dogs. I always come prepared, but they made it easier for us as well. They placed us in a room big enough for all three, and gave us spacing from the other dogs when passing with them. They weren’t judgmental of my dogs or their muzzles at all! When Dr. O’Neal came in I already had a good feeling. She interacted so wonderfully with my dogs and they were actually very calm with her all things considered! Even our dog who doesn’t really care for people sat up against her asking for pets. Her exams were wonderfully thorough, and it’s abundantly clear that she actually cares about the animals she sees. Everyone there was beautiful inside and out and I’m so excited to have them as our forever vet. Thank you all for a wonderful experience for both us and the pups! ♥️ We couldn’t be happier with how things went. Not to mention the pricing is not outrageous either! It’s great for the area!

From the sweet ladies at the reception desk to Dr Williams and the tall dark haired tech who helped me (he had an eagle tattoo and a toddler daughter but can't remember his name), they were all wonderful. I brought in a cat that had been roaming around for some time but we had only gotten permission to adopt him a few weeks prior to bringing him in. He wasn't acting right and they told me to come in and they would try to get me seen between appointments. I hardly had to wait at all! They took him back, explained the diagnostic testing and gave me an estimate and took him straight back. Unfortunately, we couldn't do anything to help him and made the decision to put him down. Dr. Williams was very understanding and helpful in explaining his condition and supportive of the decision, tough as it was. I was allowed back to see him go with the tech petting his back and I scratched his head. The staff was so thoughtful and gentle and gave us a cast of his paw print. I'm so thankful for their kindness and expediency, expertise and support. I couldn't have asked for more.

Lied to me about gabapentin being a controlled substance and denied sending it via fax or phone, saying I have to drive two hours to their location to pick up a written prescription. "The DEA begs to differ" that gabapentin is a controlled substance. The woman on the phone was condescending. Never going back to this place. Be aware that they'll hold your prescriptions hostage. Update: I had requested the owner call me and they replied to this Google review before calling me back, and I ended up calling them back. She informed me that they do not fax, call, or email prescriptions, even if you live far away or have moved or are disabled. She refused to call it in as a one-time exception considering the circumstances and that I'm a new client, and they refused to mail the prescription. I told them that my dog would run out of medication and they still refused, and they're leaving my dog to suffer in pain. I am personally a doctor and would never let my patients suffer like this; it's appalling. Clearly their priorities are not to care for their patients needs or to respect their client's time. I believe that they are more morally and ethically despicable. They furthermore didn't even apologize for lying to me. I will not be going back to this place. I had posted on my primary Google account, but noticed the review wasn't showing up anymore. I deleted that review and reposted it using this account. I think it's important to share how this practice treated me and my dog.

Of all the vets we’ve been to, this has been the best. My dog was well taken care of and the doctor and tech were great. Definitely going to be our regular vet now :)
