How to Save Money at South Granville Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

You expect that a vets office would have compassion and understanding for animals. This one does not. I equate my experience yesterday with my dog at this office to a parent with a special needs child being shunned by a school or a caregiver. As a person we are taught to be kind and gentle, accept differences in people, be respectful. As a person that should always be true, but as a caregiver especially. There was no patience given. There was 0 effort. I'm happy that I won't be returning to this office. I attached a photo from my dogs daycare that they did on him. This is the dog that "WILL NEVER BOARD HERE". The comments on his report card-"I absolutely LOVE your dog", "he is a sweetheart". I was told that "since his daycare doesn't mind him there, that's where you should bring him". Who knew that a staff of untrained people would be more caring and compassionate than 1 trained individual.

It amazes me that someone in the business of caring for animals and is responsible for there health, has no customer service skills. Everyone talks about discrimination in the world, but is it not the same if a vet refuses to board your dog because he is nervous and barks during his exam? So he's not good enough to spend the night there, but he's okay to be there during the day as you gladly take our money then. He has been going there for a while, never bit anyone, only shakes and growls if someone invades his space. You are WELL AWARE he was an abused shelter dog and is very protective of his space and owners. He has boarded for the past 3+ years at different locations with no issues at all. Please answer for everyone, why you would turn your back, discriminate against an animal because he's (NOT LIKE THE REST)!! iF YOUR CHILD WENT TO SCHOOL AND PEOPLE DIDN'T LIKE THEM BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY LOOK, LAUGH, SPEAK, SMELL, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? You are that person because this is what you have done to an innocent battered dog! Instead of trying to understand and help, you abandoned him! I hope everyone reads this and rethinks where they want to bring there animals.

I wish there was a way to leave 0 stars as 1 star is being too generous. I know every business will never make every person happy, but I was so upset when I left this establishment that I was in tears. My dog has been being seen here for a while and I never really loved coming here, but its close to home and convenient. My husband has told me the 1 time that he had to bring the dog to the vet that he didn't care for the vet here. I have a dog that is not the "norm" of what people expect from a dog. He doesn't like people. He was abused as a pup, probably not socialized enough as he's gotten older. I adopted the dog around 9 months old, saved him from euthanized and he is the sweetest thing ever. With me and my husband that is. He will shake uncontrollably, hyper salivate, growl, snarl and bark everywhere he goes. He has never bit anyone, but we are very cautious that he doesn't. As a vet, I would expect some sort of understanding for his terror and his actions. Recently I booked my dog to board at this establishment (he boards at daycare and is fine with the staff), I called to find out why our order was declined through chewy and that's when I found out that the time I booked to board over a month in advance, that they were closed. This happened on Monday of the same week I'm supposed to leave. Needless to say, I was upset. I spent time on the phone with the staff to set up the boarding. What better place to board a dog than with the vet? The very next day, I bring my dog for a vaccination that had expired and got 0 notifications about and was just there a month prior, I get told that my dog "WILL NEVER BOARD HERE". No one bothered to ask me to bring him in prior to the boarding for a short time to see how he does. I would have been happy to. As my dog is laying on the floor shaking uncontrollably and drooling, has expressed his anal glands, the vet proceeds to tell me that I should just take him somewhere else to board. I did one better, I walked in the door at home and called another vet in the area and got him set up as a new patient. I don't need an attitude from his vet. I do everything in my power and my financial means to care for the dog and will do what I think is best for him. On that note, goodbye South Granville Animal Hospital. You will not got another penny of my money. Oh! I forgot. I find out after I've been paying crazy high prices for meds through them, I was told they would price match Chewy. Nice to know after I've paid for them without that discount for a while now. If you still insist on this clinic for your pet, ask for that discount and I wish you better care than my dog got.

I rarely write reviews but Dr. Dudley and staff are so wonderful I just had to post this. We have taken our family pets to South Granville Animal Hospital, as well as a ton of foster cats, both for routine care and more urgent issues. They are always excellent. If you are looking for a compassionate, experienced vet, who genuinely cares, this is the place! A few bonuses: they actually answer the phone, they are open on Saturdays, they use fear-free techniques with scaredy cats, and their fees are very reasonable!

We were welcomed with open arms by the staff for an emergency visit & left feeling well cared for, thanks to Dr. Dudley! Highly recommend!
