How to Save Money at Alpine Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dog Romeo got very sick while we were traveling on a Saturday. We called Alpine Animal Service and talked with the tech to see if they would be able to see him, she said they had another emergency (surgery) they were working on, but she would talk with the vet. She came back and said bring him in. Once we got there they checked us in and took us into a room. The Dr came in and checked him out, they took blood and other stuff to run a tests. About 30 minutes after we arrived the came back in and told us what was up, prescribed some drugs and gave us a treatment plan and we were out the door. The next day Romeo was on the mend and feeling much better. Monday morning Romeo was feeling much better. The tech called to check on him... At 5 PM the Dr called to ask about him. WOW people who care about your pet and call to check on them. Highly recommend this place.

I am absolutely furious about my experience with this vet. From start to finish. I brought my dog in for a spay. I was told to drop my dog off between 730-8 am. My husband brings her in only to not be checked in and sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes without communication. After asking if he would be helped Is when they seemed to actually care. We hadn’t heard anything at all until calling ourselves around 330pm. Apparently they overbooked and another surgery was running over. While I understand that I expressed my concerns with how my dog had not gone to the restroom, had water etc. By the time she actually got into surgery was around 4pm. We were then told that they couldn’t do the surgery because of a skin condition and our dog was already under anesthesia. So we decided to not proceed with the procedure. When my husband finally was able to retrieve her, our dog went to the bathroom all over the floor from being contained for so long. We paid for the services rendered (ie annual check up, medication, rabies) and left. An hour later after leaving we get a call to pay for the anesthesia since they administered it. So paying for something that was given but was turned down last minute. My issue with all of this is the complete disorganization, double scheduling and how we didn’t get what we needed (spay) we were told we could come back a month later. This is almost laughable. Alpine, get better equipped to handle all the people you are booking. You lost a patient today because of your lack of care, ethics and overall attitude. Not to mention your rude receptionist calling after hours to get paid.

New to Alpine and needed in quickly. I was skeptical how soon I be able to get in, or if I even could get in. I had an appointment within 3 days and then got called for same day work in!! The front staff set the stage for a calm welcoming experience. Vet gave me options for treatment plan with potential costs and together we made a plan for my pup. I’m a small business owner myself and tend to be critical of customer service. Front desk staff can make or break an experience and these gals were spot on. 5 STARS Alpine!!

My husband and I were visiting family in Helena this summer. We live in Northern CA. Out boarder collie appenzeller mix dog, Bella, started To limp the day we arrived. We called a number of vets and were able to get Bella in the next day and she was very kindly and thoroughly treated By Dr Hogue. Bella is a real pill with vets but Dr Hogue persevered and was able to treat her infection. I would recommend this clinic to anyone and would use it if we lived in Helena rather than Northern California.

Leaving this review specifically for Dr. Mayer. Brought in our golden not entirely sure of what was wrong. She took exceptional care of of our pooch. She took time and explained everything that she was thinking and some different options. When discussing options she would work through them with us so that we understood why she was thinking said option. Absolutely recommend working with Dr. Mayer if you want a patient vet who’s willing to go the extra mile to help you and your pups!
