How to Save Money at Best Friends Animal Hospital and Urgent Care Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had the difficult experience of putting our dog Boudreaux down on Easter. Dr. Lisa Galvin handled his care. She walked us through this difficult situation and cried with us. Her and her team CARE, and demonstrated complete compassion. This wasn’t a dog he was my friend. I’m a retired combat vet and when my wife is at work and my kid’s are in school Boudreaux was who I had. To lose him will devastate me forever. The team that helped him eased that. If that’s not enough reason to choose them I’ve got nothing for you.

If their vets prescribe your dog a drug and the refills run out. You must then contact the pharmacy that you have been going to and they have to fax the vet office to get more. They say this takes 24 to 48 hours. You can't go into their office and just have new prescription just made. I don't know why you have to jump through so many hoops just for a refill especially when your animal has to be on the meds as they prescribed originally and the animal is not due for their check up for another month or two. 1st visit with them was great but they seem to be expensive and a pain to work with.

I can’t think of a single thing that could’ve been done any better. Everyone was amazing to both Tucker and myself. Treatment and charges were thoroughly explained beforehand, the call from the vet after his treatment was helpful in knowing what to expect and what I would need to do as Tucker heals, and then when I picked him up everyone was wonderful. Having to take my sweet doggo in for an injury or illness is never something I want to have to do, but inevitably it will happen and I ALWAYS know when we walk through those doors, everyone will do their best to make it as positive an experience as possible and I know my fur baby will receive excellent care. I recommend Best Friends to ALL of my family and friends.

We had the same vet clinic for 25 years and had to change after a move. It’s an uncomfortable feeling leaving what you are familiar with. We set up a wellness exam, while everyone was still healthy, with Best Friends so we could continue looking if we didn’t get a good vibe. I’m glad we stayed with Best Friends. The staff is friendly and as accommodating as the schedule allows and the vets we have dealt with have all been wonderful and knowledgeable. Vets are often under appreciated and the long hours they put in go unnoticed. Appreciate your vet no matter what clinic you choose to go to.

My cat started having breathing distress around 1am this morning. I tried calling the emergency line for 2.5 hours and nobody answered. I decided to try and drive up but nobody was there. My cat died in his carrier in my arms at 3:42 am this morning in there parking lot because they falsely advertised emergency pet care services. I will be reporting to the Better Busines Bureau for false advertisement and be seeking possible legal avenues as well. It isn't right to advertise those services, but not offer them.
