How to Save Money at Millwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dog nearly died here. We dropped him off over spring break. Four days later when we picked him up he was returned to us clearly with something wrong with him. We were told, "He just vomited a little just now." We took him home and he could not jump on his bed, could barely walk, would not eat or drink, wheezing, shaking and shivering, didn't even want to walk. Could not get a hold of Millwood so we brought him to the emergency vet. Within 3 hours of leaving Millwood he was checked into the emergency vet clinic where he was treated for the next few days for being severely dehydrated, having an obstruction in his stomach, and he was in very, very, very much discomfort. He received catheters, ivs, meds, you name it. He couldn't keep food or water down, couldn't pass gas, couldn't have a bowel movement. I tried to resolve with Millwood but was only told he was fine there and they didn't believe anything was wrong when he left there. I was told by a different member of staff he vomited 'a lot' in his kennel while he was there and by another member of staff that they played very rough in the yard with toys out of the box that he 'could have' swallowed. Long story short, our dog almost died and this place not only did not offer follow up treatment or offer any reimbursement upon our request for the more than $1,000 of emergency treatments to stabilize him, but when we mentioned small claims court, they bullied with us a letter from an attorney saying they would counter sue for any legal costs brought upon them by us. Our dog survived, thankfully, and that's what means the most to us. Do not be fooled though, just because this is a veterinarian clinic DOES NOT MEAN YOUR DOG IS SAFER HERE THAN ANY OTHER KENNEL OUT THERE!!! In my opinion, they failed to recognize our dog needed care and neglected him, causing him pain and suffering. What shocked us the most is when we called them to speak with them about it after the emergency care, their response was, "Well the emergency clinic treats everybody that way. The give everyone needs fluids whether they need them or not." I have attached the xrays showing the condition of his colon, intestines, and abdomen that occurred while he was there. I should also not that the day we dropped him off here, it was time for his annual exam, which he was given, and by their own admission he was in good health. Fast forward four days later and this is what we were dealing with when we picked him up. Personal opinions and reviews aside, the facts speak for themselves. Do not make the same mistake we did in being fooled by the fancy boarding kennels here. They are just walls. It's the care they get behind them that counts.

My fur babies loved it and the facility is clean. This was my first time boarding dogs and our fur babies first time to be away from us while we vacationed. Thank you all for making it a pleasant and stress free experience 😊

When visiting the Millwood Animal Hospital with our two dogs and three cats, our pets get detailed care from the kind, patient and knowledgeable staff who are passionate in their care for animals. Appointments run on time. And, we've always been able to schedule a timely appointment whether for a routine checkup or a more urgent matter. Our pets have visited the clinic for nearly ten years.

From the Front Desk attendant, the doctor and the assistant... everyone is always kind, knowledgeable and compassionate. We had to euthanize our oldest dog and it was heart-wrenching. No rushing or pressure. They allowed us the time and space we needed with our sweet dog and were very compassionate. A week later we took our other old dog to them to get her yearly. She was nervous and a little lost without her pack leader. The Doctor and assistant were awesome with her. Gave her treats and pet her while they cared for her.

Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. I like being able to use the online pharmacy.
