How to Save Money at Hudson Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I will never come back to this clinic. I had been taking my pets here for over 5 years, and was recommended this place by a family that had been coming here for longer. I brought my two year old cat into the clinic for breathing issues, and left with her in heart failure- being told by Dr. Beck & the technicians that she “just needs to rest”. When she was PANTING and DROOLING before we had even left. I will never forget the moment when I was told by Dr. Beck that my cat “likely has heart or lung disease”, in a nonchalant and careless tone; as I struggled to fight back tears. She continued saying she would pull up the x-rays because “they’re pretty cool to look at”. When I asked what this meant for her life expectancy she simply said “all the medications nowadays will help prolong her life- but is she gonna live 20 years? Probably not.” I called the clinic from the parking lot, as I had let her out of the carrier and she proceeded to lay down & PEE HERSELF. Once again, told that she needed to “relax”. Two hours later, the emergency vet rushed her to an oxygenated crate and educated me on the fact that cats CANNOT OXYGENATE through their mouths like dogs. So when the clinic, or so called “hospital”, continuously told me she needed “rest”, they were blatantly choosing to send home a pet in complete distress. The Oakdale Emergency Vet verbatim told me “they should not have let you leave”. X-rays from Hudson road (taken during the appt) to the ones from the ER vet, showed clear evidence of her distress and heart failure. Those two hours that my cat was in distress, going against my gut that something was wrong, telling myself that I could trust that the vet knew better- ended up being the time it took for my sweet kitty to develop a stricture in her throat. Or “tissue death” as the ER vet said. This ultimately left her with no quality of life as she was unable to eat or drink after two weeks; which was when we said our goodbyes. 💔 I would not only never recommend this clinic to anyone, but especially Dr. Beck due to her utter lack of care, professionalism, and compassion for my pet and myself- in the moments we needed it most.

They have an EXPERT groomer who was able to groom our angry cat to get his mats out. They shaved, washed, dried and nail-trimmed him in less than 45 min. It felt like a miracle. Thank you! They went above and beyond with scheduling too, reaching out to our regular vet to get records and help to schedule the needed vaccines before we arrived.

My girlfriend and I very recently brought our dog Sophia to Hudson road animal hospital after she had been having some throat and stomach issues. After the first appointment Sophia seemed to return back to normal but then after a few days started having some nasty stomach issues related to our first visit. I wanted the same doctor to do the follow up appointment since we were very worried about our dog. Due to the recent snowstorm the original doctor couldn’t see Sophia, regardless the front desk staff were incredibly accommodating trying to keep our original appointment time and even though it didn’t work with his schedule Dr. John was able to see Sophia and he provided an incredibly in depth explanation of Sophia’s symptoms and gave a very easy to follow care plan. It put both of us at ease and I’m so incredibly happy at how everything has worked out!

We had to put our sweet Lucy down last week. We have never had to do this before so it was a new and very difficult experience. Dr. John Clappier had been Lucy's veterinarian for many years. He successfully removed a growth on her back which never came back. He did the dental cleaning. He did a skin biopsy without general anesthesia. At the end we all needed Dr. John to help us say goodbye to Lucy. Lucy had started wagging her tail in the car when we would pull into the parking lot. She grew to like going to Hudson Road Animal Hospital. The staff are kind and I never had to experience a long wait time either. But most of all Lucy received great care and she liked going there. Thank you Dr. John and all the staff at Hudson Road Animal for the great care you gave to our Lucy and the sympathy extended to our family this past week.
