How to Save Money at Minnesota Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I switched vets about a year ago and I'm glad I did. My doberman had a mass cell tumor on his back. The professionals at Minnesota Veterinary Hospital were quick to assess the situation and get him in for surgery within a few weeks. I'm very thankful for the entire team. They helped me out tremendously. The care, cost and quality of people here will keep us coming back. I'm proud to say Hank is doing well and fully recovered 💪

It’s been a few years but this STILL makes my blood boil. But I found out the front desk was telling new clinics I tried since moving from the area that I did NOT pay my boarding fees and talking crap about me, I realized the money I paid was taken without actually paying for my services like it was suppose to. Jeff let me take my cats home before paying, I thought he was being nice since at one point I did work here in the boarding area. He told me when I received my tax money to let him know and pay for the boarding. As soon as my money arrived I let him know, he literally took me to the bank to get the cash out. He took the money which I guess never was used to pay for my boarding. It’s totally unacceptable that I had to be humiliated because your staff spread false information. I PAID!

I've been taking my dogs to MN Veterinary Hospital for a number of years. They have been great with both my outgoing dog as well as more timid pup. I do not feel pressured into additional services, and they made my sick dog's euthanasia experience smooth and calm. I can only express my gratitude for their dedication to our furry family members.

Have used Minnesota Veterinary Hospital services three times. My first point of contact was Kelly, who was awesome. So knowledgeable and caring. Our first appointment was for a checkup with blood work prior to neutering our 18-month-old farm rescue cat. Initially the appointment was scheduled two months out but Kelly was able to move that up to a week out. After dropping our cat off for neutering, I had second thoughts and called the hospital. By wonderful coincidence, I spoke with Jeff, the son of the founder of the MN Vet Hospital. Calm and professional, Jeff reassured me that we were doing the right thing. Ten days post surgery, our beloved indoor/outdoor cat is doing just fine. The business is managed efficiently, and the staff is caring and professional. As a first-time pet owner, I am pleased to have found such a skilled and professional group of animal lovers to care for our beautiful Siamese Manx Bobtail cat. Thank you!

Our dogs have received excellent care here and Dr. Freed saved our very sick dog’s life. He lived happily for another 7 years. The care for both our dogs has been the very best, as they are AAHA certified. The costs are very reasonable, as well. We cannot thank the entire staff enough for going above and beyond in our dog’s care. Their display of compassion is immeasurable and rare in today’s world.
