How to Save Money at WellHaven Pet Health Maple Grove, MN

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Good communication and friendly care shown to my two dogs. Comprehensive wellness plans keep my boys in good shape all year. My late father was a veterinarian for 60 years so I tend to be pretty demanding as a client. My experience with Dr Fish has been a good one.

I cannot express enough gratitude for Dr. Melling and the WellHaven team. Our dog, Katie, was struggling with severe digestive issues that had left her listless and unable to eat. Dr. Melling took the time to truly understand her condition. She conducted thorough examinations and tests, eventually pinpointing the root cause of her problems. Thanks to her expertise, we were able to get Katie back on track. Our dogs are more than just pets; they're family. Dr. Melling's compassionate care and dedication to her patients are truly exceptional. We are forever grateful for her role in saving our Katie’s life. If you're looking for a vet who genuinely cares about your fur baby, I wholeheartedly recommend WellHaven and Dr. Melling.

I moved recently and had to change vets so I tried WellHaven but I didn't love my experience here. Part of it is that I had such a wonderful experience with my previous vet, but here it felt much more sales focused than animal focused. I had two different appointments with my two dogs and saw a different vet each time. It just felt like they tried to get you to agree to many high cost things right at the start to scare you with the cost, then turned around and tried to sell you a care plan to "save money". One specific thing that made me feel this way was that one of the vets said topical flea and tick treatments are "completely ineffective" and she recommended we buy oral treatments from WellHaven for $405 per dog (yearly supply) instead. Considering research has show that topical treatments are about 85% effective compared to oral being 99%, her statement felt disingenuous, and contributed to the feeling of being sold to rather than listened to. I understand that one is more effective but negating something that is 85% effective doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially when directly after that statement it was mentioned that we could purchase the care plan for $91/month (per dog) and then the flea and tick prevention would be included. A few positives: Most of the people we met were very kind, and they were able to get one of my dogs in very quickly when he had a hot spot issue, despite being a new patient. They also brought the dogs into the room very quickly after checking in, which can be helpful for reactive dogs. In the end I decided to go elsewhere because don't want to feel like I have to fight every time I go to the vet in order to not feel taken advantage of.

Stella's care was excellent, thoughtful, kind and staff kept me informed throughout the process. They let me know what to expect, when she was going into surgery, when she came out of surgery, provided a full report of her care and let me know when I could pick her up. Thank you, Dr. Fish and Wellhaven staff!

We love Wellhaven in Maple Grove! Dr. Fish is always so kind and thorough with our dog's exams and information. Wanda, our Standard Schnauzer, is always a little hesitant when going to the vet, but the whole team at Wellhaven does a great job at being patient with her and handling her with care and gentleness. Thank you for being an excellent vet clinic for our sweet Wanda!
