How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Cruz and Megan are an amazing team! They are kind, caring, and compassionate. I was able to get in within two days and the fees were less than expected. Thank you for being so awesome!

It started out fine. Regular visits, regular vaccines. Then, my dog had a positive heart worm test (they rx’d preventatives but didn’t run a test for 3 yrs). That one visit was $400. That doctor was nice- at the time- tells me $3k average for treatment. Then I call with questions and he gets angry and completely unprofessional with me so I then transferred clinics. Total for heart worm treatment at a different clinic, which has been wonderful and professional, $400!! Do not go here! They are absolutely stealing from you. Some staff are great but WOW. I’m in the medical profession and this was just unacceptable all around. Broke my pockets and my feelings!

Bloomington Banfield had been my Hospital for many long years. They took excellent care of my cat through her life up until I had to say goodbye a few weeks ago. They helped me through the worst day of my life with compassion and I will forever be thankful to them. I know they truly loved my cat like their own. The entire Medical Team as well as Dr. Yamashita are wonderful.

I could give a long list of reasons for this review. When my dog started going to Banfield, it was fine. Now as time went on, it seemed evident that they were simply trying to make money off of her visits. Questionable ear infections to prescribe to clear, or similar situations. The worst of this situation has been throughout the last year. My dog being on a medication, it was always a hassle to get it re-newer. Every time I called, the last doctor to prescribe it no longer worked there. Claimed they moved to a different location, would call that location and they simply told me they no longer work for the company. Was refused by one vet to renew a prescription in October as it hadn’t run out yet, and forced me to wait for it to run out. By the time I called for it to be renewed, this vet then refused to renew it as the dog hadn’t been seen in person in less than 6 months. The issue there is when I called in between, I was told the dog would have to be seen once a year to confirm the prescription was still needed. Then all of a sudden the “policy” changed to every six months. This being the last straw of it always being a fight to get the prescription, but also a fight of getting the prescription sent to Costco (as the med is $85 cheaper there) I finally walked away. Not worth the visit unless you’ve got time to waste.

I thought that doing the Banfield plan would be fine because I had a relatively healthy dog. He has terrible anxiety, and I have brought him for multiple visits, but they will not prescribe medication for it. They tried to give me a probiotic. Not helping. At this point, we have tried everything. One visit they left him in a crate so long that he got anxious and tried to open the crate and broke a tooth. Then we were told we couldn’t have the tooth pulled because he has a heart murmur. We spent tons of money to get cardiac clearance for the dental procedure. Not to mention they initially scheduled the Cardiac visit without checking with us and we missed it even though we didn’t know about it. Then they just cleaned the teeth and would not extract the tooth even though that was the plan in the first place. I’m so frustrated with my care here. I never write reviews. This place is a mess. Terrible communication. Everyone seems friendly when we’re there and then nothing ever gets solved.
