How to Save Money at Opossum Pike Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Charged $95 for the First exam, First visit. Don't get me wrong, they were very informative and welcoming, but that price is not sustainable. They also made me put down a $88 deposit when scheduling the appointment. They are not transparent about prices, Services that I thought were included within the initial exam were not included. Thus, I would need to pay an extra $40, for which I turned down. Overall very nice staff and vet, but need to work on price transparencies Yes, I did see the deposit go towards the total cost. Its is still high

Eeek. I’d give this place 0 stars if I could. We’ve been dealing with my cat peeing outside the litter box since late September. He was seen at ER (weekend so vet was closed) to treat UTI since there was blood in his urine. And after that round of antibiotics we went to this vet (our regular vet) to see what’s going on bc he was still peeing blood. We brought in our own sample which showed UTI was not cleared up so they gave us an antibiotic. We then did almost the whole course of that medication (day 8 of 10) and he was still peeing blood so we then brought him BACK, they did X-ray and extracted his pee and showed less white cell blood count, so we were told to finish the round of antibiotics that we were given previously (only had 2 days left.) I voiced my concern that 2 days wasn’t going to clear his infection and they said it would. They said it was mostly behavioral. We bought a cat tree, felliway collar, felliway diffusers, anxiety meds etc (have spent over $650 between vet visits, antibiotics, and home remedies to help him.) TODAY, January 14th I call again bc our cat is still peeing on us in the middle of the night and peeing all over doors and things. Receptionist said he would need his urine extracted and sent out to see if he’s resistant to antibiotics and exactly what infection he has. Just the test alone is $222. Not including the exam or extraction. I NEVER asked for a free visit. I told the receptionist I was frustrated bc we have done everything they have said and nothing has worked and they have NEVER once told us about this test and we would of gone that route if we knew… instead we were given the run around on different remedies that didn’t work even though I was telling them i know it hasn’t cleared and because of that, I feel as though we needed a discount or the price reduced. She said, and I quote “it would be a waste of my time to get a manager bc we do not give discounts.” I then call around to other vets and a vet requested my cats chart. In the chart, the receptionist LIED and wrote that I asked for a free exam… which I never did. She should of wrote that she told me it would be a waste of her time to ask a manager bc they DO NOT give discounts. This was 100% validation that this office isn’t honest if their receptionist is lying in the chart to make herself look better. She also said she “INSISTED to me” that my cat be seen… she never insisted… gave me one option to be seen for today and that’s when I said we would need the price reduced and she came back with a snarky response that it would be a waste of time to speak to a manager. I’m truly disgusted! My boy cat has been hurting since September and it’s now January and I’m now seeing another vet because this place didn’t listen to my needs and said the blood in his urine was stress related. What a JOKE!

We take several of our fur babies here to see the Doctors, always a great experience. Very professional and helpful. All of their staff are great!

I lost my senior cat Confetti last November. She was adopted from Animal control. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and was treated here until her health was no longer sustainable. They were always kind and very caring through the entire illness. I was gifted 2 kittens Oreo and Socks a few weeks ago and they had a great first visit. A week later one of them hurt their paw and had to see a Dr. They checked him out and reassured me he would be fine. Just needed a shot for the inflammation. They have the best staff of any vet office I’ve ever used. Highly recommend this office!

My small dog is paw shy and very squirmy and stubborn when getting his nails cut but Corinne manages him so well every time. He hates going to the vet but I think he still has a few favorites there. :)
