How to Save Money at Chesapeake Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If you want a caring vet, Dr Shaw is absolutely amazing. Her knowledge, Experience, and the way she can “read” a pup is remarkable. I’ve been going here for YEARS and will continue. Today, she saw our pup Lucy. Dr. Shaw was kind, patient, gentle and caring. 1st class care all the way.

I have a chocolate lab female who is very protective and weird about people and isn’t a huge fan of men. She did fabulous today! Coming from her old vet who said she is very aggressive and wanted her drugged before every visit because they were scared of her(they never let me back in the room with her during visits so what do you expect?) to here where the tech & doctor went slow with her and everyone was so friendly ! I am very happy I switched and I fully trust them to make angel feel as welcomed and safe as possible. Prices aren’t too bad also. I will recommend them to anybody ! Definitely GO HERE & NOT Bay Area Vet they rush and don’t take the time to make your dog feel comfortable and happy in a not so fun place for them.

I have a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog who is very very scared of the vet and becomes extremely nervous and tries to nip when we’re there. We are fairly new to Kent Island (only 2 years here) so this is only her second time here. The first time around made it very apparent that she will need medicated assisted treatment to remain calm for future vet visits. I contacted them last week and asked for a RX for her upcoming vet visit, it was ready same day. We went in for our vet visit this morning at 8am - they allowed me to come in and go straight to the exam room. Dr. Davis and her assistant were absolutely wonderful. They sweet talked my girl, they let her know it was okay, they made her more comfortable. They were accommodating for my nervous girl. I felt such a relief when I left there. Thank you so much. So very much. We will be back on Thursday with our other pup!

I wouldn't recommend bringing your guinea pig here. I came in with my piggy because he had a tumor that was growing rapidly (otherwise was completely healthy) and they came in for a total of 5 minutes and told me that it was quote "growing around the bone and nothing they could do." Keep in mind they only felt the tumor with their hands, they took no Xrays. I asked about next steps and they said to just wait it out and once it starts bleeding or bothering him to call and have him put down. It starts to grow and bleed so I get into contact with a different vet whom was actually knowledgeable about guinea pigs. Turns out its not growing around the bone at all and have surgery to get it removed next week. Crazy what an Xray can do. He's also been prescribed 2 different pain medications considering he has an aggressive tumor on his leg. No mention of pain meds at this place. Seemed like they could care less about my pet. Im so thankful I found some real help for my Theo, this place really let him down.
