How to Save Money at Academy Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We love Academy and have always been pleased with the care our pets receive! The staff is kind, knowledgeable and patient. Some things have changed over the years we’ve been coming but that’s going to happen anywhere you go. What’s important is that they care about us and our pets well being and work with us to take care of them. At our most recent visit the vet took time to listen to some concerns about my golden and decided to try out some new medication for his anxiety which I very much appreciated. Thank you for helping us take care of our furry crew! We appreciate you all.

If you are looking for great care for you fur Babies look no further. Great and fair pricing with a level of care and friendliness that you don't see to often. 10 out of 10 for me.

No longer does walk in appointments, new hours are normal working hours so unless you take off work, inconvenient for appointments, called and was told they could see my dog two weeks out, when he has an immediate issue. Over a 20 year customer with 7 different pets, and when questioning the changes I was giving a snarky answer "well it's on our website". I have preached to others for years the wonderful availability of this place, no longer the case. Dr. Lewis has been wonderful, despite the 30 min drive to get there. He was incredibly passionate and determined with a pet suffering from seizures. When I mentioned my disappointment in the changes of hours and appointments I was told by front desk gal "ok, I will note your file that you wont be returning" huh?, ha, certainly won't, when treated this way. Found new vet with hours to accommodate for normal working people- open to 9pm.

Everyone was great. From our check in with Berni (sp? sorry) who so calmly juggled MULTIPLE phone calls, along with people in and out the door. Just amazing equal patiences, and gave attention to solution finding to the best her ability towards everyone. Which if you've ever worked in the medical field where your attention is pulled in different directions, then you know that is a talent worth much praise. Onto our Vet tech Rosie who did a fabulous job trimming nails of a impatient puppy experience, and was so warm in personality toward Blanche (my pup) and me that it created a good start to our visit. Then Ashley who checked me out with a joyful smile and bubbly personally as we sorted out schedules and prices of items I needed. The front desk and first interactions matter so much to set the tone, and you three did beyond. LASTLY, Dr. Lewis was hands down so sincerely kind, clear with very knowledgeable education, and his energy was genuinely interested in Blanche. I felt like he loves what he does. Lets face it, all health care professionals are stretched thin a lot of time, and it's a high stress job... with that in mind, I feel confident that this animal hospital does it's best to support with the most compassionate care available within a complex environment service.

I was very satisfied with the service, care & prices. Definitely recommend this hospital. I’ll definitely be going back there. I loved the doctor there. He does a great job! You can tell he love his job & I like that a lot because I can trust you with my cat. Thank you so much 😊
