How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my puppy for her first ever vet visit last week and she was so well taken care of! The staff were incredible and helped ease my anxiety regarding all the concerns I brought to them. They took the time to explain everything they were doing and gave us great tips as first time dog owners. Such a great impression, I can't wait to bring my Penelope back!

Absolutely the worst pet hospital around. Waited 1 1/2 hours to be seen by the veterinarian. It was supposed to be a simple shots and nail trim, the dog was sedated with pills prior to the nail trim. They brought the dog back 1 hour later shaking and visibly scared with 1 paw trimmed and covered in fecal matter. They said he pooped on himself while trimming his nails and need to come back to do the rest. They also tried charging me for the nail trim. They barely wiped the fecal matter off. He had to ride in the car covered in poop and then we had to bathe him when we got home. About a month later trying to refill heart worm meds they are saying we banfield forgot to do the test and I need to bring the dog back in. I have called 3 times and still have not gotten a call back by the head vet. I won’t be using this hospital again.

Thought I was paying for pet insurance not what is is. $70 a month for a year for shots would not cost as much. Kept on prescribing medications that I had already purchased which were not working come to find out it was misdiagnosed. They obviously DO NOT read the patient’s history of prescriptions. Now I can’t get out of the contract without paying inflated immunization costs. I WILL NOT BE RENEWING AND WILL WARN OTHERS NOT TO USE.

Honestly the doctors and nurse staff are so kind and answer all my questions when i have them. Its the front desk staff that I have issues with. Everytime I call this location they never turn on their phones at 8am even though that is when the location is due to open. Also, each time I call I'm put on a hold.. the last hold was over 20 minutes and the lady didn't even ask me what I was calling for she just put me on the hold. I hung up the call and drove there... she was doing paper work that probably could have been postponed to answer my 2 minute question. Whenever I walk in the lady never acknowledges me she just keeps her head down and puts on the act that she's busy (maybe she really is but a "hello" or "hey, I'll be right with you as soon as I'm done" would suffice) She has also forgotten to check me in several times. I don't feel like me or my dogs are a priority

Didn’t even get to have my pets seen at this office before I realize that they are horribly mismanaged. The level of immaturity of the people working there is not providing for superior services. Try hiring actual adults instead of teenagers that don’t have any clue on how to comprehend statements or How to understand Common sense in making decisions about how they make empty promises and false information. Don’t bother they are clearly overwhelmed and understaffed to handle anybody new.
