How to Save Money at Charlestown Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my cat here from another vet. The veterinarian here told me things the previous vet didn't about my cats possible food allergies, and explained how the previous treatment probably wasn't the best course of action. Since then, we got my cat on a special diet and she's the happiest ever! The price is right here's the staff is great, and they have a very loveable orange cat who will hang out with you in the waiting room!

The staff and vets always treat my pup kindly, but they are very busy so it takes a long time to get appointments as well as test results.

Won't come back and work with them again. Staff was nice and doctor was okay the only problem I have with this clinic is that they don't know how to manage prescription approval efficiently. And they confused my cat's medication with another. So about one month ago after my cat visit Dr. Sell prescribed me an oral medication to treat my cat's infection. Dr. Sell said we can order it online by ourselves since they don't have the medication in their clinic at that time . When I looked it up online I found no such medication so I tried to order some other similar functional medications. After I placed the order the pharmacy informed me that the clinic refused to approve those medication . I thought maybe this is because the medication I ordered was not right and I can only order the exactly same one the vet told me. Today I called the clinic again to ask about what exactly my prescription is called. Not until now did they tell me that they actually allowed me to purchase my chosen medication and insisted that they already approved one of the medications I ordered. But the pharmacy staff confirmed they never received such approval, which caused me never being able to receive the medication. Now my cat is having the same issue again but I don't have proper medication for him. I'm so mad and frustrated. I don't get why you processing a medication approval so hard and I definitely wasn't paying $90 visit fee for this ignorance. Needless to say you should let your pet owners know exactly what you prescribe them instead of letting them guessing the medication name and searching it by themselves.

Appointments here always felt quick and unengaged. Dr. Sell would barely look at our dog and issues were not thoroughly discussed. With so many good vet options around the Charlestown area there is no reason to choose this one. After switching vets we realized how engaged and attentive other vets are. Our new vet literally got on the floor with our pup! Prices are also high compared to elsewhere. They do no in house cytology and give outrageous quotes!

Everyone in this practice is always incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and communicative. My dog has separation anxiety and previously had bad experiences with prior vets, so she is always skittish when we walk into the vet. Dr. Sell and her team handle my dog with a lot of care, attention, and patience. They are also very transparent with pricing and are on the more affordable end for veterinary care. It's also very easy to obtain medical records, vaccine history, etc. I would 100% recommend this clinic over and over again!
