How to Save Money at Boston Animal Hospital North Station

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are extremely pleased with our entire experience at the Beverly St. location of Boston Animal Hospital! Not only were we able to get a same-day appointment for our Great Dane, we’ve also been able to schedule follow up appointments, labs, and procedures with ease and in an extremely timely manner. While most veterinary offices in Boston take forever to get into, and are scheduling appointments several weeks out, the caring staff here understands that time is extremely important when it comes to your pet’s health. More importantly, the staff at this location is amazing! They are extremely nice and love seeing your pet. It’s more than obvious that they care a great deal about you and your pet as well. They are gentle, professional, and do everything they can to make sure you and your pet are as comfortable as possible. Finally, Dr. Hemstreet is a fantastic veterinarian who clearly takes great pride in what he does. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable, but he also takes the time to fully explain and translate his thoughts/care plan/diagnosis to you in a way that’s easy to understand and follow. He’s also extremely thorough and will spend ample amount of time with you and your pet. Most importantly, it doesn’t feel like he’s trying to push expensive and/or unnecessary tests/treatments on you and your pet. It’s obvious that he cares about your pet’s health, and he is definitely dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcome for you and your pet. I’ve never had a vet ask me to please call them a couple days after our visit, just to check in, until I saw Dr. Hemstreet. I can’t recommend this location & its staff enough! Not to mention, this office is brand new and literally blocks away from where we live. I wish I could give more than 5 stars!

So I’m a fan and longtime customer of BAH South End Location. Today I visited the new location on Beverly Street. Earlier I had called in and spoke with Ely who let me know they had a cancellation and I booked it. The place is nice, the people are friendly and they were receptive to suggestions. They delivered the same care and attention that I receive at their other location. I took the T in when they mentioned on the phone that parking was tight but I did notice a parking garage on the same street. There were one or two spaces around the corner that I noticed as well (this was around 11am on a Wednesday). So just be aware of that if you plan on driving. Great experience. I definitely recommend.

Everyone at this office made us feel heard and welcome! They were so good with our cat and gave us all the information we needed and more. So happy they’ve opened in this area.

Boston Animal Hospital in the North End is top notch. The front desk staff, medical assistants and veterinarians are always pleasant, friendly, and have exceptional attention to detail. My dog isn't even nervous going into the clinic! Highly recommended for your pets needs!

Switched my dog Ronan from Back Bay Vet and am so happy I did. Dr. Hemstreet and the staff are so kind, attentive and welcoming. They take the time to explain what they’re doing, the reasoning, cost, etc. which is refreshing, as most vets in the Boston area surprise you with fees and it feels like they are in it for money rather than your animals best interest. Ronan got her teeth cleaned and two teeth extracted. I received multiple updates and explanations during the process. The cost was also much less than any vet I’ve had experience with in her 8 years of life. Overall very happy with the switch and it’s a perfect location for us.
