How to Save Money at Bocage Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and practitioner. My dog fell in love with them. She felt very safe and comfortable through out the appointment, even though she had to get shots. We definitely learned a lot and I feel a lot better about my dog’s health moving forward. As dog parents we want to take best care possible of our furry babies and Bocage Animal Hospital makes it possible! Due to our baby’s current health condition we will be working in collaboration with the practitioner and the team on getting her healthy. Looking forward to working together. Thank you for a great service and experience. Highly recommend

Bocage Animal Hospital has zero customer service experience or business etiquette. Office manager lied about giving my dog his daily seizure medication. It never happened. Disappointed in the final outcome of a 2-year relationship with Bocage Animal Hospital. I took my dogs there for boarding recently. One required a twice daily medication for seizures. I provided medication for the stay plus added one additional day’s worth of medicine as a backup. Four days later, picked up my dogs and they gave me the left over food and medicine bottle. When I got home, I saw that all 8 medicine tablets were still in the bottle. This was the same number I brought to the vet when I dropped off my dogs. I sent an email the next morning asking how did my dog receive medication when all that I provided was returned to me. My email was not responded to. I called Monday morning, around 9am, and was informed that the office manager received my message and was investigating. I called back at 3:15pm when I had not heard anything all day. The office manager answered my call saying she was “just about to call you.” She informed me that there were three technicians who worked while my dogs were boarding and that one of them thought that the 8 pills in the bottle were the last ones (and that I didn’t have more). No one called me to confirm. The technician independently decided to fill a new prescription and administer those pills to my dog instead. They never called me as the owner to inquire, ask for approval or anything. There was no fee for a new Rx on my invoice. Additionally, when I picked up my dogs, there was no mention of the above sequence of events occurring (because it didn’t occur). I asked the office manager a few additional questions from her responses, I concluded that she was being DISHONEST and flat out lied to me (with a smile). The following day my dog was scheduled to have surgery at Bocage Animal hospital. When the manger so eloquently lied to me and demonstrated how little she cared about my dog or my business, I canceled the surgery. She gladly accepted the cancelation without skipping a beat. The office manager informed me that she would call me the next day because she needed to speak with someone who would be at work on Tuesday. This was a piece of the investigation. The office manager never called me on Tuesday. This further validated my thoughts that she was being deceptive. Before the call ended, the office manager emailed my dog’s recent vaccine records to me and ended the call. From the reviews I’ve read, my experience is at this company is not unique. If there was a score option lower than one star, I would have selected that.

I have been to many vet offices over the years and have never been more impressed than I am with Bocage. They have true compassion for my animals, they are patient, judgement free, professional, and kind. They took the time to explain everything to me in detail, made sure I was knowledgeable moving forward, did follow up calls just to check in, etc. I can not recommend them enough!

If you have a difficult or medically complex pet, Dr. Loftin and the entire team will not disappoint! They are consistently amazing year after year! We were on vacation in 2022 (10 hrs from home) and needed assistance with our dogs broken nail. They are incredibly knowledgeable and helped diagnose a rare toenail disease during that initial appointment. Our sharpei Boris has a big personality and vet visits can be stressful. At our most recent visit the staff proved to be as kind, professional, and knowledgeable as ever! The team is always very accommodating and will work hard to not resort to over medication/sedation, if at all possible. This high standard of care is incredibly important and makes such a difference for sharpeis given their medical nuances. Knowing Bocage is here for us has allowed us to vacation in BR or NOLA, with our pup, knowing we have them to turn to should we need anything. Highly recommend! I would give them more stars if I could!

We had been taking our dogs to Bocage since 2021. Recently, we went to another clinic for a second opinion and discovered significant, chronic health problems that needed to be addressed immediately. This was especially frustrating given we had paid for a wellness exam at Bocage less than 2 weeks prior to her diagnosis. Dr. Regan and health records claimed she was healthy at the time, which was absolutely not the case. Almost $5,000 later, our dog is on the road to recovery and seeing a team of more experienced veterinarians elsewhere.
