How to Save Money at Southland Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had only been there for annual checkups for my Cat until last week. When my Cat stopped eating and drinking for a few days they got me right in for an examination. Highly knowledgeable, caring and compassionate. Can’t ask for anything more.

The Southland Vet Clinic staff and Dr. Hardigree have cared for my cats for over twenty years. Their love and compassion for animals is evident in everything they do. One of my cats, who has since passed on, was a wonderfully sweet animal when she was at home, but turned into "a puma with a bad attitude" whenever she visited the vet. Even with her, they were patient, understanding and kind.

We credit the compassionate professional partnership of Dr. Millie Hardigree and her caring Staff with helping us provide our gentle dog Hank a loving, high quality of life up to the very moment he passed last month, just 19 days shy of his 13th birthday. Our countless open conversations together, in person and on the phone, helping us to steer his care through changing needs, and the warm space provided to us to talk and ask questions along the way, made that possible. At the end of his life, and throughout those hardest of moments, Dr. Hardigree and Staff extended the very same compassion to us as to Hank, as we began experiencing the grief of his passing. I cannot emphasize enough the positive experience we had over time with Southland Veterinary Hospital, and specifically with Dr. Hardigree and Staff. We are deeply grateful for their expertise and humane care, for their sensitivity to Hank’s needs and experiences, and our own.

My cat had a wound on his scruff randomly, then he decided to scratch at it until he bled! The staff at Southland Vet helped him out. My cat would prove to be extra pesky and found new ways to dig at his wound. I was very stressed out because I was being diagnosed with blood cancer and I had to get blood transfusions for myself in order to survive. I had no money to take him back to the vet because despite having a very serious disease, my disability was cancelled. I got a care credit card so I took him in ASAP and they put him in the cutest thunder jacket to prevent him from reaching his wound. They gave him meds and cleaned him up. When it came time to pay the bill, someone had already paid it for me and I still can't figure out who paid it! I can only assume someone with Southland Vet paid it, knowing my situation and knowing I was very scared that I would have to surrender my cat because I wasn't able to afford his care. Whoever paid my bill--I wish there were more people like you in the world because I thought I was going to have to surrender my baby and it was tearing me apart. My cat is happy again, and he's all healed up. The best part is that he loves wearing the thunder jacket and it has eased his anxiety. He was hiding all the time but now he's back on my lap. Thank you.

I have always taken my dogs to Southland and will not go anywhere else. The staff is friendly and compassionate, and the doctors explain everything clearly and kindly. Wait times are always short and emergencies are handled immediately. My dog died unexpectedly two weeks ago, and the doctor and staff were incredibly patient and caring with me, my husband, and my pup. I recommend Southland Vet to everyone I know, and I’ve always heard great responses and thanks for the recommendation.
