How to Save Money at Clays Mill Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been taking our dog Lars here for about six months when it came highly recommended to me by several of my college science professors. So far we have had a great experience so when we decided to adopt a cat this past weekend we decided to take it to Clays Mill as well! Here are some of the things I really appreciate about Clays Mill: 1. Our dog is reactive with other dogs, and they always rise to the challenge. They have us wait in the car and allow is us to enter and exit the exam room when the hallways are clear. This really cuts down on my anxiety, as I know it means my dog won't make a scene in the hallway! 2. My dog is not the best behaved for vaccines. We informed the vet, and they always take special precautions to make the process as smooth as possible! Last time they had me feed him some tubed dog treat paste while he got his shots, and he behaved great! I loved that the staff went out of their way to help me distract my dog so the experience went smoothly. 3. We typically see Dr.Arnold, and she is just so nice! She explains things in a way that I can understand, and never puts pressure on me to make decisions! All of the staff have been super friendly! 4. They are very transparent about cost! Whenever they recommend a diagnostic test they always let me know how much it will cost before they order it. I really appreciate this, as there is no big surprise bill at the end. Additionally, they are upfront with me about how important each test is. For example, our new shelter cat had only been tested for feline leukemia by the shelter. The vet recommended testing for HIV since the cat was previously a stray, but when I hesitated after hearing the cost the vet told me it was recommended but not required, and that it could always be done at another visit. I did end up getting the test done that day, but I appreciated that the vet was willing to be flexible and work with my needs. I could go on, but those are just some of the highlights! They are very adapting to the needs of your pets, even if they happen to have some extra behavioral challenges. They are also very flexible and willing to find the best treatment plan that works for you and your finances. I would highly recommend Clays Mill, especially Dr.Arnold, although I have heard great things about the other vets as well!

We really like the team at Clays Mill they have always taken great care of our pets! However, the cost of veterinary care in the last few years does have us shopping routine care in and around Lexington. Not unique to Clays Mill.

I needed a second opinion on an issue my pet was having. I was able to get a same day appointment for my dog as a new client which I was not expecting! The visit was pretty quick and Dr. Arnold was very kind and informative. The office is clean and organized and all of the staff were very friendly. It was a great experience!

Without a second thought choose this clinic. This clinic was recommended by a friend (who loves their dogs like family). They are knowledgeable and well informed on senior dog care. It’s a luxury to find such a wonderful group of people who want to help.

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff! I take my rabbit & my dog to this vet for all of their routine checkups & illness treatments. Everyone has always been super friendly, kind and caring. They take the time to explain everything to you and really treat your pets as their own. Highly recommend 🐶🐰
