How to Save Money at Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I live in Evansville Indiana, across the state line from KY. I could not find a local Vet to take my baby girl when she was very sick. Finally another Vet recommended the Animal Hospital in Henderson, Kentucky. I called and they said bring her in. My dog was very dehydrated and had no interest in drinking water and not much interest in eating any food and I had no idea what to do. They had to keep her a few days to get her rehydrated, but she's doing well now, and I'm so grateful that they took her in. They called to check on her after she got to come home. They even have groomers right there at their facility, which I think is really cool. I saw a comment someone made about maybe their prices being high, but worth it, but on the contrary, compared to the Vets in Evansville they are not high at all. I'm just grateful they were there, they were open and they took my baby in and my babies home and okay now. I would like to add that I talked to the Vet's assistant several times when my baby was there, and she was very knowledgeable and could explain things to where I could understand them. They were only about a 17-minute drive from my home, and it was worth the drive. I understand that there is a shortage of Vets in Evansville, Indiana. Hardly any of them are taking any new patients, so if you're having trouble finding a Vet for your baby, I would recommend giving them a call. Thank You to All the Staff there and Willow says HI!

Took my animal (who is also my ESA) here for a simple fecal test to check on his status of worms as he was being treated for them, the test was negative, great, except they wanted to take some x rays because I also mentioned that there was a sore or bump that i was worried about, so i said sure go ahead. The vet comes back in and shows me the x rays, and shows where she thinks there's and object lodged in his throat. Then she starts trying to tell me, actually no, almost trying to convince me and sell me, on how she wants him to have an operation that could run up several thousands of dollars, and flat out tells me how risky it is and that she could likely kill him right on the table. Thanks for making me feel confident in your level of expertise and making me feel like my animal would be safe in your care. This is my ESA and you're telling me you're gonna kill him while he's under your care, but you're urging me to allow you to perform an operation on him. So i took him to another vet out of state (because who knows if all the vets in Henderson are intertwined so I decided it best to bring him out of state) for a second opinion from a veterinarian who is raved about. This veterinarian takes x rays, comes back in the room, and states three things: 1. Not seeing whatever it is that she was seeing in the x rays she took 2. If there was an object lodged in his throat like she was describing, he wouldn't be able to swallow his food or drink his water. 3. He appears to be in perfect health. I have been going to Animal Hospital in Henderson for a few years with my animals, but after this experience, and having walked out of their clinic feeling completely traumatized, i will NEVER be back, not with any of my animals, and having gotten that second opinion, which Im so glad that I did, i seriously lack any confidence now in their ability to protect and care for any animals, but mine especially.

My kitten needed a vet today and spur of the moment Dr.Turley agreed to see and treat her. The vibe here is comforting and welcoming from the moment we entered the door. Everyone was professional, friendly and informative. Dr. Turley was so attentive to Callie and addressed any concerns that I had. I felt reassured and informed when I left. It was a very good experience.

It's clean and up to date. The staff is friendly. I wish that all of the vaccine would have been put into my pet's nose. ( They didn't put her head back. The medicine went up, then back out.) I felt like that was money down the drain. Both vaccines were nearly 200 dollars!! That's too much!
