How to Save Money at Murlen Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just had a horrible experience with the loss of my pet and i want others to be aware!!! It was time for my 15 year old dog. His quality of life was awful. I finally made the difficult decision to have him put to sleep. I called and inquired about the process. Once I decided to go through with it, I called back. I was placed on hold for over 15 minutes and transferred multiple times. They knew why I was calling but rather than treating me with kindness and grace, I was a business transaction. After some confusion and a change in how I was told the process would be (and how i had mentally prepared), the doctor put him to sleep. About 10 minutes later, while I was in the room with my kids and husband, crying, the nurse came in and announced “that will be 188 for today’s visit.” I was in shock. We literally just put him to sleep. He was still on the table. We paid and left. No tact. No grace. No sympathy. we will no longer be taking our other dog back here.

Save your money and go to Stepping Stone in Gardner. They are great. This place jacks you around with senseless meds, the secretary is beyond rude. I won’t go in detail but they suck. The vet doesn’t want to deal with your dog if they are older. Go to someone more advanced!

Been taking all of our fur babies here for the past few years. Dr Thompson is honest and doesn’t just jump to the most expensive treatment options first like some area vets do. They are trustworthy, friendly, reasonable and give my pups and cats awesome care.

Me and my three cats are transitioning from Georgia and it's been rough. Mainly on them. They had to live somewhere other than with me for about 3mos. Soon after arriving in Kansas I realized that they all 3 had fleas. That has been an endless headache since April. I'd taken them to Blackbob Animal Hospital about 3wks prior to coming to Mur-len Animal Clinic. That was a huge mistake & nothing was resolved. I decided to try Mur-len Animal Clinic. It was just a random pick & I am so glad I found this place. Dr. Thompson is so pleasant & considerate. The receptionist was very welcoming & pleasant as well. Im so grateful. I was starting to get very discouraged & scared about my cats health & well being & felt like no one cared enough to help me get them back to their normal selves. Everyone is so mean & just selfish nowadays so I'm always elated & thankful when I encounter genuine kindness especially if they're helping me.❤️ I'm glad I found a vet finally!!!

Would not recommend taking your elder pets here. We took our older cat in because she was having trouble swallowing and hadn’t been eating much. They gave her a shot and it didn’t help. We went in for a follow-up and they told us she was just old and there was nothing they could do. They wouldn’t even let us back to see what they were doing for her. So we took her to the vet in Spring Hill and they ran blood work and didn’t find anything abnormal. They gave us a steroid to give to her that should clear everything up.
