How to Save Money at Auburn Hills Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My pony had a vet visit with Dr. Dave Hargarten out of Auburn Hills this morning, and I wanted to give him a nice review. He is such a nice person! He is very knowledgeable and personable. He was super gentle with my pony. Very quick and thorough. If you are looking for an equine vet in the Auburn area, I definitely recommend Dr. Hargarten.

We took our Rottweiler here to get fixed and they did a great job. There was 1 assistant there that has experience with Rottweiler dogs and she made us feel welcome.

We recently adopted two Aussie’s, one is 5 and one is 6 years old. They’re potty trained, and have never had an accident in our home. We had a death in the family, and we were forced to board them for a few nights. We called the clinic, and they were more than happy to take them, update their vaccines, and tag on their vet check-up that was scheduled for later in the week. We dropped them off, and the staff were very kind and told us to have a good trip. A few days pass, and I went to pick them up at the clinic. I paid for the kenneling and the vaccines. I asked how the vet checkup went, and I learned that it didn’t happen. That was disappointing, but I just said, “okay” and confirmed that they were still scheduled for later in the week. The receptionist handed me my receipt, with no further explanation as to what I even paid for. My dogs were brought out to me, filthy. I asked how they did, if they went to the bathroom okay and if they ate okay. I was told that they are in a room on a raise md floor and they stool and urinate wherever they like and it is cleaned 3 times a day because they don’t have a fence to take them out. I was also told that one of my dogs had diarrhea and I was handed medication to give her 3 times a day. I have no idea what this medication is; I wasn’t told. I was so upset to hear this. I paid for my dogs to be locked in a small room, to pee and poop all over the place, and come home smelling like such. If you’ve ever seen the property that the Vet Clinic is located on, you’d know there is room for a fence. After picking them up, I immediately went to a pet wash to clean them up. Later in the day, one of my dogs peed on my floor in my home (which has NEVER happened), so now I have to retrain/remind them. I’m so upset by this, and I feel like it is completely wrong to board dogs in such a manner. I truly feel like they were not taken care of.

Dr. Dave and Tammy saved my best friends life. I couldn’t be more grateful for what they did for Bailey. They saw her the same day even though I called late in the afternoon and stayed late to perform an emergency surgery. I’ve never had a vet team care so much and go so much out of their way for me and I’m forever grateful for the extra years they gave me with Bailey. No words to explain my gratitude.

Every person you interact with shows their love for animals as they are family. Ever since I adopted my sweet Mara in Nov of 2022 and brought her here, I transferred to have my older dog, Semper, who will be 14 in August. I live in the FW area, and it's about 25-30 minute drive, but it's worth the wait because of how they treat you and your pet/family member. I couldn't be blessed with better vets/technicians than them. Wonderful staff! Prices are affordable as well!
