How to Save Money at Foote and Friends

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Not one to write reviews but if you’re in the situation we were in, and your goal is to help your pet, costs add up and this is NOT one to waste money on unfortunately. We loved the idea of not having to bring our already anxious/reactive dog into an actual practice so Dr Footes virtual counseling seemed perfect for us. Our phone consult with Dr Foote did take place, but none of the issues or problems we had were addressed or helped. Medication/supplements prescribed were not clearly instructed or advised nor were doses or next steps. Our dog was labeled as “challenging” (obviously that’s why we hired a behavioralist) when we expressed our concerns with Dr Footes lack of response to both myself and our trainer. Dr Foote claimed to be traveling which caused her lack of response yet her responses were very vague and again did not answer any of our questions. “3 month unlimited support” is a lie unless useless vague info counts as support. Dr Foote would not even come to a reasonable refund agreement amount which we offered to pay her for her time but kindly requested some of the funds back so we could seek help elsewhere. It’s a shame Dr Foote calls herself a behavioralist and takes advantage of pet owners who simply are trying to help their pets and are already stressed enough! This service is nothing short of a waste of time and a scam.

We are incredibly grateful to have been referred to Dr. Foote for our dog, Bo. Dr. Foote has been thorough, responsive, caring and understanding while working with us. Bo had a bit of an unfortunate start to life before coming to us and some negative experiences with vets that left him extremely nervous and defensive when it came to vet care and some general body handling by unfamiliar people. Thanks to Dr. Foote, we now have a fear free and much less invasive vet care plan for Bo. Working with our regular veterinarian, she has guided us in finding an appropriate medication combination for vet visits and suggested little tweaks in our vet’s handling procedures to help Bo get through the visits with as little stress as possible. She gave us support and guidance in the area of desensitization and conditioned emotional responses for us to work on at home, in order prepare him for his vet visits. Our last vet appointment was a much less stressful experience for all of us, including Bo! Much of what I’ve learned from Dr. Foote, I am able to apply to other areas of our lives, which has helped Bo become much more comfortable and confident in his everyday life. We can’t thank Dr. Foote enough for what she has done for us and Bo.

Dr. Foote is an expert that was recommended to us by our vet. She has deep knowledge and vast experience in feline behavior and working on aggression between pets in a multi-pet household. Her consult sessions are extremely productive and her methods showed postive results every time. She is very communicative and easy to reach. She worked with our vet to design a diet plan and takes into account every single detail. Dr. Foote is a professional and truly cares about the well being of her clients and pets.

Dr. Foote was very knowledgeable and her suggestions for our dogs made a lot of sense. We're doing our best to follow them & have definitely seen some improvement.

We spent over $300 on services to help us with our dogs behavior and did not get the services we paid for. We were asked to complete several tasks and we did as requested, we emailed her consistently with videos and questions but did not get responses half the time. We emailed her telling her that we did not feel like we were getting the services we paid for and got a response they would be in touch more and never heard from her again. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is she prescribed medicine in the beginning that was helping some but has stopped working.
