How to Save Money at Oak Park Animal Hospital Ltd

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Dina and the staff at Oak Park Animal Hospital are fantastic. They are very caring and patient in answering questions from new pet parents.

Dr. Cristina is AMAZING!! I have had nothing but great experiences here at this vet. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes this year & it really took a toll on me emotionally & financially. I was taking her to the Hyde Park Animal Clinic in Chicago (worst vet ever never bring your pets) at first & based on the way they treated my cat & I, I knew I had to find somewhere else for us to go. Thankfully I came across this place. Dr. Cristina has been nothing short of a blessing for me & my girl Oreo. I mean any question I have, she always has an answer to. She also reassures me & makes Oreo & I as comfortable as possible. Any time I call, even if she’s with a client, she always calls back. Since switching Oreo over to OPAH, Oreo has gone into remission in just under a month with the advice of the Dr. Cristina. Dr. Cristina says she’s a miracle baby & I can’t agree more! Highly recommend this place. Please ask for Dr. Cristina she’s so knowledgeable.

My husband and I were looking for a local vet with more of a community and family vibe after adopting our new puppy. Unfortunately, Oak Park Animal Hospital was not quite that. The staff was really nice, but did not care much to get to know us. When we had a concern about our pup, the vet did not call back for just over 48hr and our puppy was left with uncontrolled, severe symptoms that whole time. It was during the week with regular business hours when we were calling. We did not know what to do and felt she was very much uncared for. We changed to a different local vet, and they were VERY responsive, got us in for a visit in less than 12hr, and confirmed that while our pup did have demodex, itching with demodex is very unusual and she’s been suffering from a secondary bacterial infection the whole time. She’s now on oral antibiotics and already feeling better, thank goodness! We also did not like the practice won’t examine your pet in front of you, they are EXTREMELY expensive, and there’s no cost transparency at all whatsoever. Spent over 350 dollars here in less than a month all for what ended up being a missed diagnosis anyway. Spent WAY LESS at the new vet for a correct diagnosis on the first visit, and they show you an estimate up front prior to completing services. Do not recommend unfortunately. I hope they can make some improvements in their approachability moving forward for other pet owners!

How much do I love Dr. D. and the crew, let me count the ways. I first started going to OPAH a number of years ago when I adopted and required services for my ferret, Sheridan. They were wonderful with him and provided so much knowledge and support. When it came his time to expire, the personnel handled everything and were all very sad, as he had become a part of their family as well. More recently, I have taken one of my cats and a new acquired Guinea pig to see Doctor D. As always...extremely knowledgeable, professional, and accommodating to all of our needs. Thank you!!

I've only gone here once for the flu vaccine, but I think I found my vet!!! I tried PetVets animal hospital for flea and tic shots or something like that and they thought my baby was a monster. They gave her anxiety meds for future visits, said she needs a behaviorist/ psychological help, and that I should never let her be around other dogs. They were unhelpful when I asked about what is the nearest, best emergency room. It was a really bad, stressful situation for everyone involved. At the Oak Park Animal Hospital they were very kind to my rhodesian ridgeback and she likes them. They are very good at explaining things and answering my questions. They have lots of good information. They have treats!! My dog especially likes the guy who is like the physicians assistant or nurse type role.
