How to Save Money at Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation of Homer Glen

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our 14 yr old shihtzu tore her cruciate ligament on one back leg and has a luxating patella on the other. In April her vet wanted to operate but given her age and complications with a recent dental procedure we decided to try pt. Not only does gizmo no longer need surgery, her specialists at purdue are thrilled with her progress and she is back to walking and playing. She is currently on her birthday vacation and yesterday walked almost 2 miles, half of which was up hill to a mountain lookout. Aside from fatigues because she's old she showed no signs of pain or slowing down. She had a blast! Best of all gizmo absolutely adores the staff especially Carla. When we get to the office she walks on her own from the car right into the office. While waiting she will peak around the doors looking for her friends. Dr. Amber put together the perfect blend of treatments for her and Carla has done an amazing job! Jill is great with scheduling and billing. Everyone here absolutely loves animals and all the other dogs we see here also look calm and happy. Fortunately we have a recovery rider that we added on to our trupanion plan so we only pay between 8 and 17 dollars per visit. We highly recommend this office, honestly nothing bad we can say.

Dr. Amber and her staff are amazing. Since starting treatment, my dog's mobility has significantly improved. His pain level has gone down, and he no longer gets muscle tremors. I couldn't be happier. He can continue to have an active lifestyle. I am so grateful to Dr. Amber and her staff.

I love VSMR so much. Literally the best of the best care at this facility. My local vet told me my dog had a sprained leg, she couldn’t walk on it for a month but I was told to just let it heal on its own. Eventually she was compensating with her other leg so much she messed up that one too and couldn’t walk anymore at all. She was so helpless I was in tears and our vet refused to do anything about it. When I was searching for PT options I found VSMR and consulted with Dr. Amber who said she needed TPLO surgery on both legs. It was a pretty penny but it was wayyyy worth it for the care she got here and I would do it again if I had to. She is 100% back to how springy she was before this and she’s almost 10 years old. Dr. Amber is incredibly kind and intelligent and I love that she gets specific measurements on the usage of each leg. When my dog did physical therapy after her surgeries all the techs were so sweet to her, they still tell me she’s one of their favorite dogs. Jill and the rest of the staff at the front are also incredible. I fell asleep in my car one time waiting for her and was about a half hour late to pick her up from PT- Jill just had her hanging out with them in the front and said it was no big deal. Her surgeon, Dr. Weber on the vets side is also very intelligent and kind and I trust her so much that I have specifically requested her to do my other dogs surgery as well. He doesn’t even have a scar from it. I know I’m going on and on but all in all they are a top of the line facility and I absolutely would not risk bringing my dog anywhere else for intense procedures.

If I could, I would give this place a million stars… I’ve been taking my senior dog Tin Tin to do physical therapy for almost 2 years here before it switched names. Tin Tin didn’t recover well after her two ACL surgeries and literally was walking on her two front paws for 6 months almost 100% of the time! I was at a loss on what to do until this place was recommended by her surgeon. I was hopeless and then Dr. Amber started her on a rigorous program with pain management. We still go there to do maintenance therapy every other week and she now is using all 4 legs 90% of the time! The staff are knowledgeable and she even became a case study with one of her techs who was working with her because she was so impressed with Tin Tin’s progress. Everyone knows Tin Tin here and Jill the secretary pretty much runs the place. I’ve had good experiences with all the techs that Tin Tin has worked with and I think they have all worked with her at this point! Carla is Tin Tin’s main tech and she’s just wonderful and so caring for Tin Tin. It seems that everyone likes working here and cares for the animals. We are fortunate that Tin Tin’s pet insurance is able to pay for most of her treatment here. I am happy with Tin Tin’s progress and I’m glad that we can manage her pain and get her to use all her legs again after so much struggle. I highly recommend this place to anyone whose furry friend may be struggling with walking. I just wished I found them sooner! Also, consider getting your dog evaluated by a PT before a surgeon to see if PT can help first instead of going straight to a surgery!
