How to Save Money at Petco Vaccination Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve never had a bad experience at Petco, and until now, never a bad experience using the vetco clinic. I usually go to the Lake Zurich location, which is 5 mins away from my home, and had made an appt at that location a week prior. On the morning of appt was informed I could no longer use that location and needed to rebook. I made an appt at Crystal Lake which is 25 mins away. I filled all the intake forms ahead of time. A few hours prior I get a text message asking what I need done, I again tell them. It’s like no one was reading the intake form. Once I arrived at the store, no one greeted me and I wandered around trying to find where to go. I asked the front desk and waited for two associates to finish their convo and they seemed annoyed at me. I found my way back to the clinic, told them my name and my pets name and again was asked what I was hear for! What is the point of filling out forms I’m wondering? The two clinic staff were friendly enough but again just seemed like they were confused. I then made my way to where the actual vaccination table was and I said hello and the vet and technician looked at me like they had no idea why I was there. There was no “hello there, welcome to vetco, this must be Nitro”, etc. I was asked yet again what I was there for - it’s starting to get comical at this point. One of the things I needed was a blood draw to test for heartworm and tick borne disease. The vet looked at me and said “well you need to hold your dog still” and not in a nice way. I sat on the floor holding him while the tech held him also and the vet tried multiple times to get blood to no avail. Twice she used a needle that wasn’t in proper working order as she said it just wasn’t sticking. Then two more times to stick my dog it didn’t get blood. My poor dog was so upset at this point and was stressed and panting. I finally said just to stop, it wasn’t worth it to do this to my dog. So the two of them just looked at me. No explanation, no “I’m sorry that didn’t work out” or “this sometimes happens, we can try again another day”. Nothing. So I had to ask what to do- why did this happen. The vet said nothing and made the tech do the explaining. Neither ever said sorry. Neither of them seemed like they even liked animals. I was so frustrated and sad for my dog who was super stressed. I asked if he could at least get his Lyme vaccine. The vet stood over him and said “I could if he’d hold still”. What?!?! What vet expects a dog to just hold still after he was stressed??? Aren’t they trained in animal behavior and how to calm them in these situations? The vet tech didn’t even help this time, she stood by while I held onto him. The icing on the cake was that a prescription was filled for two meds to didn’t even ask for. And then I drove home 25 mins away. What a disappointing experience.
