How to Save Money at Rowland Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Doc. Rowland is the best vet I've been to. When I got my new pup, Lulu, He was able to hook it up when my apartments were threatening to charge me $25 a day till she gets vaccinated. He made special arrangements that same day for my pup to get her rabies shot after I left him a message! I really appreciated that!! He is also genuinely a caring Doc. I'll be coming back every year to keep my Lulu protected. 🐾🐶💕

Dr.Rowland and his techs were amazing. We took our 4 yr old dog who suffered from IVDD we were hopeless, but he gave us hope that with the proper care and meds he would recover. It’s been over a month and he is walking and doing so much better. We will always be thankful for his care to our fur baby.Thank you Dr.Rowland and Staff!

Took my mini daschund here for a lump I found on her chest. Dr. Rowland was knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and knew about IVDD (back disease common in daschunds). He diagnosed a lump on her chest as a lipoma needing nothing further. He recommended a dental which we had done a week later with great results. He ended up extracting 5 teeth, prescribing meds, and calling to check up on her after the surgery. Prices were so reasonable too!

Doc Rowland is an AWESOME, AMAZING guy!! Took time out of his weekend to talk to me and give me advice on an emergency with my 2.5 month old kitten…and she was not even registered at his facility. Unbelievable!! This man really does care for our fur babies!! Of course my precious is now registered with him, along with her three sisters!! Highly recommend him!!! He is an awesome vet! AAA+++ Can’t say enough about him!!

Yesterday, I brought in a kitten from a litter we found outside & have been taking care of. This kitten was born paralyzed waist down & we have spent two months teaching it to walk, play, helped it use the bathroom, cleaned it. We wanted to make sure it had a good life while we found a foster willing to take on the extra work. Unfortunately yesterday morning, he started to decline very fast so we sped him to the closest vet we could find because all the emergency vets gave us a week time frame to wait. This poor kitten was laying there, clearly suffering. We walked in & before even looking at the kitten they said it was going to be $195. They did not mention what this covers or doesn’t cover, they took our payment & kitten & told us to sit in the waiting room. I went to the bathroom for maybe 1-2 minutes & when I came out they had already put the kitten down. There was no conversation on what it would cost for us, or really any sort of conversation at all, it all happened so fast. After putting the kitten down, the short haired red head vet tech came back very rudely to ask if we wanted to “pay $130 to take the DEAD CAT HOME WITH US. Or $250 for Metro to pick up the body.” Talking about our kitten like it’s an item in front of my 8 year old niece. No compassion while we all cried. Even offered us a BAG to carry it to which my niece asked her “You mean like a dead goldfish?” & she ignored her. When we were obviously shocked by these numbers, given we already paid $200 to walk in the door, she pretty much laughed at us & explained “well we have to pay the crematory” & rolled her eyes at us when we needed time to figure it out. As again, these are outdoor kittens we were trying to HELP. Luckily, we called metro ourselves & explained the situation in tears, & metro was kind enough to help us out & even pick up the kitten for FREE. I do suggest you all work with crematories yourself if that is the very sad route you need to take after a visit here, because no one in the office wanted to help at all. The only person who thanked us for trying was the actual vet. He’s the only reason I’d even give two stars. This isn’t a retail store where we were arguing about a discount on a shirt, we watched a kitten slowly suffer all morning just to have this vet tech treat us like garbage instead of be grateful we tried our best to do the right thing for this helpless kitten. I regret not listening to anyone who said not to come here, but we hoped they would want to help this poor kitten. Not just worry about making $500 off of it.
