How to Save Money at VCA Cat Hospital of Chicago

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My partner and I have taken our cat to 4-5 other vets in the area, and this one is by far the best. They are attentive and detail-oriented and are much more thorough with their exams. Most importantly, they know how to handle cats: where to touch her, how to keep her calm, give her space, keep a spot open for her to hide. Other vets would treat the cat like a dog and stress her out.

This place is incredible. I took my muffin Mickey there last month and he is a special needs cat. They were very professional and helpful with what Mickey needed. Dr Foose is amazing everyone should go see her. She was gentle with my little boy and she helped show me what I can be doing better to care for my boy. I loved that she was talking to my boy and making him feel comfortable during his exam. He is not the best when it comes to exams but she did great! Thank you Dr Foose and VCA!

I highly recommend Cat Hospital. Dr Czerwonky is fantastic and noticed something on the xrays during the dental that turned out to be bone cancer. I really appreciate how good she is at noticing things. Dr Foose is also wonderful. I'm grateful to her for writing two appeal letters to my insurance company when they initially suggested lymphoma was a pre-existing condition. Based on Dr Foose's letters, my insurance agreed to cover lymphoma for both cats which was a big help. She's also very good at making my cats feel at ease. Dr Thompson is also excellent and very wise. She recommended extracting all of my cats teeth during a dental. I didn't want them all extracted though. Later my cat was diagnosed with diabetes and couldn't get a dental until the diabetes was under control. By that time even though it was only a year later, one of the teeth was infected and had pus and the other teeth were also all bad. In hindsight, I wish I had listened to Dr Thompson's advice. Dr Currigan is also great. She did a dental with extractions for Yodel after he was diagnosed with diabetes. It's riskier for cats with diabetes to go under anesthesia but thanks to the good care from Dr Currigan, he pulled through without issues. I really appreciate all the doctors, nurses and staff at Cat Hospital. My cats have some chronic health conditions and they've been very good to me and my cats. I especially appreciate that when I return from the vet, my cats are always very calm and I think it's because it's a fear-free place, so they have good handling techniques and go slowly so my cats are comfortable.

I cannot recommend VCA Cat Hospital and Drs Foose and Czerwonky enough. I trust them so much I would even let them operate on me. Although the facility is far from my house, I initially chose the cat hospital because the vets specialize in cat care. I keep coming back because of how well they take care of my two babies. I am extremely proactive about my cats’ health, and we visit VCA multiple times a year for checkups. One of my cats is a complete monster at the vet, but the technicians and vets show him way more patience than I’ve seen with other facilities we’ve visited in the past. That makes me feel extremely comfortable and happy. My other cat has severe dental issues, and Drs Czerwonky and Foose were able to catch the issues early enough that they prevented tooth and severe bone loss (and saved me thousands of dollars). I was very nervous about Hamilton going under anesthesia for his first dental procedure, but the doctor and technician walked me thoroughly through the procedure ahead of time and ran blood tests to ensure there were no underlying conditions that would put him at risk. Everyone who works at VCA, from the doctors to the technicians, is friendly, kind, patient, and most important to me, highly knowledgeable and competent about cat healthcare. I am a lifelong customer and will hopefully never take my cats anywhere else for care.

The entire staff at Cat Hospital of Chicago is so wonderful. They take such good care of my cats, one of which is a senior and they are able to give him the extra special care that he needs. While the office was closed from smoke damage due to the fire next door, they came to our house multiple times to help care for my sweet old man. Dr. Foose is absolutely amazing to my boys! I can't recommend this place enough 😊
