How to Save Money at Near North Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been taking my dog to Near North Animal Hospital for over 13 years and Dr. Boin is great! My dog is older now and has recently had a bunch of health issues...diabetes, cushings, etc. and they have been so great at helping me maneuver our new "normal." While dogs don't typically love going to the vet, my dog is comfortable enough with the staff to sleep all day there when he has tests that take awhile to be completed. It's a smaller office so you might have to wait a bit when other appointments run longer than expected (same as a normal doctor's office). I would recommend Near North Animal Hospital and Dr Boin to anyone looking for a vet to care for their pet!

Dr Boin is really nice. A little overpriced but I guess that's expected living where we do. Always kind enough to answer all the questions and give me recommendations. Getting an appointment on short notice might be difficult, but if it's no emergency I highly recommend. One star less is just for the fact that it's nearly impossible to get a same day emergency appointment if your dog is sick.. my previous vet was always able to squeeze us in on the same day so it's not convenient looking for a new vet to get you in because they need all the information and you dont know what could be wrong with your baby so you don't wanna waste time

Do your research before selecting your pet’s provider. I am a new puppy owner and I didn’t realize how much I was being overcharged for vaccinations and preventative care (literally 2-3x more than the average cost I found out). After several visits I decided to switch my primary care to a fair, market-priced, and professional vet in the same neighborhood. I just can’t understand how they can charge $83 for a distemper booster, where other clinics charge between $30-$50 for the exact same vaccine. While the doctor himself was nice enough, my visits were extremely brief and uninformative. In particular I think the staff were unprofessional, and I can only assume were overworked based on their attitude toward a customer.

If you are considering making this your vet, with the expectation that when your pet becomes sick you would be able to take your pet to your usual vet who knows them and has your records, then I highly recommend you find a different vet. I called today, as this is vet I have been going to, to make a sick dog appointment, and was told in no uncertain terms that they do not do that, they ONLY take scheduled appointments. They recommended I call some other vets and see if they would take me. What is the point of going to a regular vet if they won't see you when you need it most? I cannot say strongly enough how disappointing this was, not to mention leaves me scrambling to find a vet today, when I really need it, and I have to hope that someone will take us as a new patient AND see us same day.

Worst experience I’ve had going to a vet. Let me clarify- I never even got to see the vet. I asked Linda at the front desk how long she thinks it’ll be. Her response: “I’ll know when the doctor comes out”. I told her that since my dog is reactive, I’m going to wait outside since their 2nd room is inaccessible. 25 mins later, after standing in freezing temperatures I look to see if the prior patient has left- nope. Linda is chatting away talking to the owner. I decide then to leave. I get a call 30 mins after my scheduled appt, Linda offers no apology, just asks if I’m coming in ( and then goes on to explain how it might be longer). I told her no, I’ve left and I don’t think this is going to be a good fit. Her response? “Sensational”. If your office can’t accommodate for a reactive dog for the admin portion, how do you expect me to trust that you’ll provide my dog the best medical care for the same thing?
