How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is in regards to my most recent visit to the Meridian, Idaho. On August 16 I brought in Charlie girl for her yearly dental cleaning and a lump removal. I previously have been in to address these skin problems on three other visits. In the spring when I was in for my preventive care exam. On this visit the lumps were up to golf ball size. Because CG moves so much we were unable to do a sample while awake and the vet that I had see the last several visits recommend we wait until August when she was coming in for her dental. At that time we would remove the middle one on her chest and the large one on her side(under her front right leg). On August 16th when I did my drop off they took Charlie Girl back right away. After I signed my paper work then they took me back to the kennel area so I could show the nurse where the lumps were. This should have been done before she had been taken back in an exam room with myself and a tech or myself and the Dr. I then received four phone calls throughout the day concerning her care. Two were while she was under anesthesia wanting to know what to do with removing these lumps. The first call was when I discovered the vet doing her dental work and procedures was not the same vet I had seen the last three times. I found out this is a common practice. When I went to pick up my pet I was not charged for the procedure as this was being left open until the manger could review my case. On Saturday August 17 the manager called to speak with me to find out what had happen and to better understand how this could be avoided. I explained what had taken place and she stated that this has been an on going practice that the vet you see does not mean you will be scheduled the same vet for surgeries or dentals. At this time I was informed I still had a bill that needed to be paid and they could take off 250 of the open invoice of 500. This was a surprise as I thought I hadn't been charged. This whole process was handled very unprofessional and should have never happened. I have been with Banfield for years because I have moved a lot due to military and other career circumstances. Banfield made it convenient for me to get consistent care for my dog. From the miscommunication of the care of my dog with who was taking care of her, the surgery, the amount of phone calls I had during the surgery, and then the check out it's unacceptable that your company is still wanting to charge me the 250. I will be going to the Boise Location from here on out instead of the Meridan one.

I love, love, love Dr. WYNN. Her down to earth, country doctor attitude and warn demeanor make me feel VERY good about bringing my Coco Chanel to Banfield. All of the staff is warm, kind and caring. I wish I could mention them all by name. Sydney and Josh stand out as being very good at what they do and how they treat us. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

Dear Banfield Hospital in Meridian. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received from Dr. Barbara J. Wynne today. As a veterinarian, I expected her to provide professional and compassionate care for my dog, but unfortunately, this was not the case. Dr. Wynne had never seen my dog before and was unfamiliar with her medical history. Despite this, she insisted on pushing her opinions on me in a very rude and condescending manner. I have done extensive research and consulted with several specialists regarding my dog's cancer treatment, and as a result, she has been cancer-free for two years, with no ear infections, healthy teeth, and no skin issues. I believe that Dr. Wynne could benefit from being more open-minded and willing to learn from others. If she were to do so, she might be able to save more lives instead of imposing her beliefs on clients she has never met. As a strong advocate for my pets, I will continue to do everything in my power to keep them healthy and disease-free, and my track record speaks for itself. I kindly request that Dr. Wynne not be assigned to care for my dogs in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Petra
