How to Save Money at Hayden Pet Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Hayden Pet was able to schedule my pup the day after I called about her bad teeth, when my previous animal hospital wasn’t able to for 2 weeks. After her dental procedure they text and called to keep me updated on her and to find out how she was doing. Very caring and complete. They all were accommodating kind sincere and caring. I am very impressed with the whole staff. When my grand pup moves here she will will too be joining the Hayden Pet family. I cannot recommend them enough. Very grateful to them. Thank you to everyone there for taking such amazing care of my girl

They treated me and my pet exceptionally. I really appreciated the time they took with us. They even followed up multiple times to check in on my rabbit Muffins. I will definitely be going back if the need arises.

We said goodbye to our beautiful golden retriever, Lucy, last week. She was our baby, our family, a best friend for 13 years, the dog our kids grew up with. Our hearts are broken by this profound loss. Dr. Nelson was so kind and supportive during our final visit. I cannot thank everyone at HPMC enough for the care and compassion extended to our family and especially to our sweet girl.

The staff is great. We were in Idaho traveling from Texas when our little Gigi became ill and had to go to heaven. Everyone was so compassionate, understanding and patient with us during our saying goodbye. We even received a sympathy card after we were home with our little Gigi’s paw print inside. People make all the difference, and they definitely did. Thank you to all.

The time has come for me to share my experience with Hayden Pet Medical Center. It's been four days since I had to put down my wonderful yellow lab, Kayla. As I reflect on that day and write this review, through my tear stained fingers, I cannot have chosen a better place to bring her to for our final moments together. I woke that morning and I knew something was wrong. Whether your child or pet, a parent knows best when something just isn't right. I called another local vet that I had taken her to just over a year ago and they said they were full, they could not take her. They offered an appointment at the end of the month (16 days from now). I told them she'd probably be dead by then. They then offered to have me show up the next day at 7 am as a walk-in to see if they could squeeze us in, but no promises. My girl needed help, and she needed it today! The emergency clinics they referred me to in Spokane, Post Falls, and CDA all had such horrible reviews. I was not going to subject her to that. I called around several other vets in the area and they were all full, so sorry. And then I called Hayden Pet Medical Center. The young lady on the phone said, "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. Hold on, let me talk to the Doctor to see what we can do". Within a minute, she returned and said, "Dr. Sussman can see her", and we were in there within the hour. The clinical staff greeted us right when we walked in the door, took Kayla's weight, and immediately escorted us back to a private room. Within a couple minutes, two clinical staff came in to ask us what was going on, took her vitals, and consulted with the doctor. Dr. Sussman came in and suggested blood work and x-rays, and she let us know what her initial concern was. Within 30 minutes, we had the results. A splenic mass had ruptured. She was bleeding internally. Dr. Sussman delivered the news with such amazing compassion and tenderness, being fully aware of the gut wrenching decision that an owner must make. She explained our two options, the expected outcome of each, and the costs for each one. Neither option was good news. I could see the discomfort in my four-legged girl's eyes. I could smell on her breath that she was dying inside. Yet, despite her trauma all she wanted to do was be with me, right by my side to be sure I was okay. Just like she's done every day these past 10 years. My two options clearly became one. They allowed me time to pick up my daughter, who lives 20 minutes away, so that she could say her final goodbyes. They brought Kayla to us in that private room and assured us we could take as long as we wanted. In the midst of our private time, one of the clinical staff quietly came in the room and said, "It's ok for her to have this now, if you'd like her to". A nice piece of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Wow, how she enjoyed that wonderful treat! Then it was time. My daughter exited a private side door that the clinic has for those who walk this path so that they don't have to pass with tears through the waiting room. They allowed me to stay with "Good Girl" while they prepped her for the procedure. I was allowed to be with her, face to face, as she drew her final breath. I looked in her eyes and she looked in mine. And then she was gone. They allowed me to remain with her for as long as I needed. I never felt rushed, never felt a burden, never felt like I was just a number. Rather, despite meeting the staff for the first time that day, they made me feel like I was part of their family and they were part of mine. They graciously presented me with keepsake options for my remembrance of her. One final head scratch, one final hug, one final kiss and then I left. Hayden Pet Medical Center, what word do you use when "thanks" seems so insufficient? As long as l live, I will remember the gentleness, compassion and availability you gave to our family. You are doing God's work for people like me. I will forever be indebted to you.
