How to Save Money at Ammon Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Vets are expensive. What can I say? We had a Sheltie who is refusing to eat, so we took her in. First visit fee is $55, followup is $35. So that was refreshing. The tech took us in and took her temp.. Then Dr. Hollie Schrader saw our pup and was very gentle with her. She massaged her belly, listened to her heart and lungs, peeked in her ears and eyes and quickly checked her teeth. Finding nothing she suggested a blood test $100.55, to check for indication of infection etc. Blood test indicated some issues and we were given options on x-rays that we were told may or may not show anything and/or medications to treat the issues and would cost another $160.00. We opted to start with the medications - another $150.00- and a 1 week follow-up appt. Oh, we also asked about dental work and got an estimate ranging from $515 to $648- yikes, how do people afford to get their dogs' teeth cleaned? Hollie barely even lifted our dogs lip to look at her teeth. Luckily they are accepting new patients unlike several vets in the area. Unfortunately, when we returned a week later for our follow up things had not improved. Our Sheltie was still not eating - anything! Hollie touched her belly and said she was guarding it, indicating something serious. Then she simply stated that we ought to put her down rather than go through a lot of expensive tests. She said she would let us think it over, and we were left alone in the exam room with our beloved pup for over half an hour. We had already discussed this as an option rather than have our sweet girl suffer. But the amount of time we were left alone was ridiculous. We were so sad that we were then just treated as a credit card. It seemed all they wanted then was for us to pay and nothing was done or said to relieve our grief at losing this baby. She was only 7 and had been in great health only a month before. I cannot recommend this vet.

I love taking my dog here. They take GREAT care of her and are very responsive. I also really like using the boarding. She doesn't come home depressed or "smelly". Super happy people and always have great follow up after a visit.

We have switched from Countryside to Ammon vet. Countryside was becoming much too costly. Ammon vet is very reasonable. We have been in twice now and I enjoy talking with all of the staff. They are very knowledgeable and honest. I do not leave feeling pressured to run tests, have procedures done or to get prescriptions for my dog. Dr. Schrader is so kind and caring. She takes her time with each visit and listens to our concerns. You can tell my anxious dog is much happier here as well compared to our previous vet. She is much more calm and less nervous. I am so glad we made the switch. We are very happy and plan to bring pets here for years to come!

The staff are very friendly. No long time waiting. They get you right in and out. They take their time to answer all questions. Best place ever to bring my dogs 🐕 ❤️ my dogs like coming here as well. No fighting with them to go in building, unlike other place we've been.

I adopted a Great Dane from the Idaho Falls Animal Shelter who has a very rare genetic eye problem that we are trying to solve. After visiting with 3 vets, I chose to work with Dr. Burr at Ammon Veterinary Hospital. I'm a very strong willed advocate for my girl and felt that Dr. Burr was the one who listened to me regarding Ava's needs. Her most recent surgery on both eyes was a less invasive procedure we hoped would work, but unfortunately it didn't. I'm 100% confident that her upcoming surgery will go perfectly and be successful. Dr. Burr is extremely knowledgeable and experienced and I trust him help Ava regain more of her eyesight to have an even better quality of life! I highly recommend Ammon Vetrinary Hospital!
