How to Save Money at Rush Animal Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

A certain abrasive and condescending vet tech should focus on customer service and being compassionate to clients with dying pets. That is what clients expect and deserve. Rather than tactlessly telling them that “Dr. said it’s a really cool case.” I let it be known that I was upset by this comment and was not offered an apology. Just a “yea, I get it” from the vet tech and a “she shouldn’t have said that” from the Dr.. But really, it was also the Dr. who shouldn’t have said what she said. You find my dog’s terminal sickness and suffering to be “a really cool case?” What an absolutely terrible experience to deal with while trying to save my dog’s life. Obviously the reviews overall here are from satisfied clients. I’m sorry I was not one of them. Perhaps a name change from Rush Animal Care to Rush “We-Don’t-Really” Animal Care would more honestly reflect the business model here. In response to your self-righteous response: Turns out you are supposed to help your clients in their time of need. That’s what we overpay you for. If you weren’t closed on Wednesday the 5 minutes you took for me wouldn’t be remarkable. And yes, my “perception” at being told that you said my dog dying was a “cool case” caused me to be upset. And you took no accountability. You didn’t apologize. You just said Emily shouldn’t have said that. That’s not an apology. Nor is saying now that you apologized. You had plenty of time to respond to my emails and you instead finally sent me a vain letter not addressing valid complaints and instead preaching about how you stand by your team. How noble.

Been coming here for 25+ years now. Staff is always super friendly and nice and Dr. Rush has always been there for us and our animals. Dr. Pat is also amazing and has seen my puppies a couple of times now and always follows up to see how they're doing.

Such an amazing place. Definitely takes care of your animal and very knowledgeable about your animals as well as letting you know some tips of stuff you didn't know you could do. Definitely easy on the pocket and they are very good at helping educate you about what stuff to use or too look for and more. I definitely highly recommend them and they accept new patients 🥰. They accept lots of payments types and even have a budget payment option if needed for those higher payment surgeries and more. Definitely recommend to checking them out. Let them know I sent you 😊.

We've been talking our dog and cat here for years, doctor Rush and staff are very informative and kins. The time finally came for me to have to say goodbye to my kitty, and Rush was very supportive and made sure she wasn't in pain or distress. The parking lot is a bit of a doozy, but I wouldn't take our animals anywhere else.

Dr. Barbara Rush and staff always have gone above and beyond the treatment for my dog Kodah. Have been with Rush Animal Clinic for (4) four years, and wouldn't ever consider using any other Vet. Any of you folks with sick critters, take them to the best Veterinary Clinic in the Capital area. Rush Animal Clinic. Give your loving pet the best!
