How to Save Money at Blue Cross Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

10/10 if you want to be gaslit! I’m still in shock with what Vet Jane told my husband. I thought she cared about animals but now I see she cares more about keeping a buddy buddy reputation. We lost our boy Baby at an emergency visit to a very bad ER. The ER said it was a routine procedure for a catheter to remove crystals from Baby’s urethra/ bladder. He finished the procedure we got a call that he’s fine and healthy and would make a full recovery. Then 30-40 min later I got a blunt traumatizing call saying he died and they didn’t know why. I had to keep my Baby in a friends fridge for almost 2 days trying to find anyone that could do a necropsy. I know that this vet Jane doesn’t so she was the last on my list even though she was Baby’s primary. Every vet on island refused to help as we were not patients with them. So in last ditch efforts I called Blue cross in hopes at very least we could get an xray or even a blood test/ tox screening as “I don’t know why he’s dead” isn’t an answer I’m willing to let go. I called blue cross but had to go into work so my husband had to take the call which I wish he didn’t cause he didn’t deserve to be berated the day after we lost a family member. These are the vets words to my husband “I’m looking at his charts right now and I can tell you he had kidney failure” my husband reminded her that ER vet said no signs of infection she cuts my husband off “I know that place no other vet clinic could of done a better job. Your cat had crystals that’s the chance you take with male cats, he died from kidney failure” it’s one of the most asinine things I’ve heard and I can’t believe that came out of her mouth. If you’re gonna defend that ER and speak so highly of them why didn’t they flat out say that as well? They are still saying no signs of infection. I can’t believe I took my pets here for over 14 years. I can’t believe I referred friends and family to this person. That this is supposedly a person that cared about animals when in reality couldn’t even be bothered to helping us find out what happened even just an X-ray. Talking to her has done more damage than anything. Our family is heart broken, and she couldn’t give an ounce of sympathy, empathy, or even care about what happened to her patient. I’m absolutely disgusted with you Ms Jane.

Dr Jayne and her team take such good care of my dog and I’m so grateful for their efforts! Great service and just always there to help.

Dr Jane and staff have always given my golden retriever the best care in the 10 years we have been going to Blue Cross. Unfortunately, we are moving and have to switch vets.

Jessica Franks

The staff is exceptional and kind. They did an excellent job with our older dog's teeth and lump removal. Extremely affordable and appreciate all the love they have for their patients. Highly recommend for their professional and compassionate care.

They seem to genuinely love animals here. I brought in a feral cat with a cut and they took me in even though walk-in time was over. They are very decently priced too. Definitely will be back.
