How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my dog in for ear infection hoping to have the vet look at his ears to see what she thought. The vet TECH swabbed his ear, and came back to say it was infected. She was AWESOME. Loved her. However, the doctor never came to look at my pet. I stayed with him the entire time. Upon reviewing the medical records, the doctor documented a normal “observation” exam with normal ear exam even though she never looked at him. They even have a pulse rate documented but never checked his pulse…. I will be cancelling my monthly plan due to multiple issues similar to this. I advise to stay away from this practice.

Kept my dog there for 8 hours simply for a comprehensive exam that they did not manage to finish. Returned my dog with half a nail trim and smelling like pee. Maybe if he wasn't there for 8 hours they would be able to handle him in a reasonable fashion. said they were not able to give de-wormer, which we managed to give him in about 5 seconds as we were getting out of the car. Vet can't seem to read notes as they completely ignored the notes about him being fixed, and his seasonal allergies and what they already tried in the past. Next to no nutritional training either. does not know the difference between hydrolyzed protein and a LID Hypoallergenic food. why suggest a protein you have no way of knowing he is allergic to? we will not be coming back to this location and I suggest anyone else with a time sensitive schedule or love for animals stay away as well. not worth the money. By far the most frustrating experience I have been through. The lack of care, compassion and competence shown today will not be missed.

Here we go AGAIN!! I'm truly disgusted with Banfield. My insurance plan has gone up AGAIN, but the Veteranarian isn't able to freeze the skin tag off my dogs head, and she keeps rubbing it to where it's bleeding. The doctor says she doesn't feel comfortable putting her to sleep to remove it because my dog is 16. Why Banfield don't have any less invasive methods beside surgery? Or just prescibing medicines that doesn't work. Or they have to farm you out to other pet hospitals because they can't properly diagnose or treat your pet. Banfield, don't respond to this review, because you really don't want to help pet parents. 😒

Service was great but I was not expecting the cost I paid after my pup visit. Unfortunately he had a bad ear infection and I was already over my spending budget so to have it looked at was too much for my affordability. Doctor sent him home with ear drops to take for a month, but unfortunately the bottle is not big enough to last that long. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The care my pet received was great, Dr. Tolliver is an awesome veterinarian doctor! My complaint is with the staff working the register. My dog was there for his annual teeth cleaning when I received a call from the staff asking if I wanted an additional procedure to be done while my dog was under for his teeth cleaning. I asked specifically if I could pay the additional cost with Care Credit card. I was told yes. When I got there to pick my dog up, the lady working the desk could not figure out how to charge my Care Credit care. I even called the customer service number of Care Credit and let her speak with them directly. While on the phone with them she said ok, as if she understood what to do so we ended the call. Once I hang up the call, she told me she needed the primary card holder DL number, date and expiration date. Now, this lady has my Care Credit card in her hand with my name on it, she spoke with Care Credit customer service to confirm the account information and available credit, yet she is requesting I provide the DL information of the other person listed on this same account. I tried calling my husband twice to get his DL information but didn’t get answer, probably because he was at work and can’t always answer his phone. So I’m left with no choice but to pay with my debit for a procedure that I wouldn’t have gotten done today because I asked specifically if I could pay using Care Credit. And this additional procedure was $378. Again, the care my pet received was excellent……my complaint is with the folks at the desk that say they take Care Credit as a form of payment then don’t know how to bill the card and lack of customer service in NOT TRYING to call someone to help resolve the issue. I used my Care Credit card at other veterinary clinics with no problems and have never been ask to provide the DL information of my spouse. Horrible experience today.
